They slightly reduce the distance and amount of infected moisture from your lungs spreading into the surrounding air a bit as you exhale, but that's pretty much the extent of their benefit. Not enough to matter, though, as evidenced by that CDC study.
That benefit is overshadowed by leaving a soiled rag on your face that, if there was virus in the air or droplets, is now attached to said face. Improper use of these masks causes infection, including: reusing masks, having them on after even a relatively short period of time, constantly touching the mask and face, or coming in close contact with others because of the false sense of safety.
Many if the self-proclaimed hero mask wearers break all these rules, making their masks useless.
There's a reason why masks in hospitals are disposed after each contact. Except surprisingly now when you'd think priority should be higher.
Source: I work Healthcare and we are mandate to have a mask our entire shift, yet are only allowed 1. (Obviously with positive patients this is different and we use full fresh PPE, yet it shows how badly handled things are being handled in all other scenarios)
If it's one way I guess you could wear it inside out?
Whatever the case, this is obviously a newish product box if it's got COVID19 written on it. My guess is it's more of a cover your ass move than anything else.
No, not at all. What it does is slow and limit the travel of vapor particles from your breathing, coughing or sneezing. The virus travels on particles. Cloth captures a lot of these particles and limits the distance they travel.
You can find videos demonstrating this effect.
The mask can’t help the wearer very much.
Surgeons wear masks to protect the patient, not the doctor.
There are, of courses, masks and headgear that protect the wearer, but they are elaborate.
“Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.”
I’m in a position where I wear a mask for 30-45 minutes a week while grocery shopping. Not a big deal for me. I would go nuts if I had to work 8 hours a day in one.
Continuous mask usage is more likely harmful to the wearer than helpful to others, unless you are trying to filter out some relatively large particles such as pollen or dust.
Not to mention how folks handle them between uses. General consensus seems to be that the passenger seat cushion sterilizes masks. Gross.
That's where mine are! I will confess, I did wear a respirator. Last Fall, when I was painting a quarter panel on the WifeMobile and applying 2k clear coat. And I have not worn one since.
n95 protect coming in and out, these only protect going out. Even then you need to not touch anything, wear gloves, eye goggles, etc otherwise it barely works.
Even if you wear a respirator that will block the virus; which these masks won't. Without goggles/eye protection you are still vulnerable to exposure; as eyes are another vector for the virus. So WTF good is a mask without goggles?
If you wear a mask complying with NIOSH Standard N95, those have filters that can ensure that viruses will not pass through. They are difficult to breathe through and they are tight around the face. Some medical staff who are treating patients wear these kinds of masks in the hospital. Some also wear a 3-ply surgical mask.
Regular face masks which don't comply to this standard will not work at all.
Holy smokes, I did not expect this submission to be so popular. Mask are cool and all, but not when they're being mandated to go about your day to day life. That's when things go too far. And it clearly does not protect the wearer. However... on the flip side...
I'm still trying to figure out where this pandemic of coughing and sneezing people are. Maybe it's location dependent, but I can't remember the last time I saw anyone cough or sneeze out in the open. I'm sure it happens, but it seems rare to me. So I don't get why the insane push to be wearing these when the possibility of transmission in that form is insanely low. Seems to me we're better off carry around sanitizer to keep our hands clean and a handkerchief for the involuntary achooo moments.
Surprisingly no. And I bet if you ran a culture on a mask worn for even 30 min you'd never put one in again. That petri dish is going to be awfully colorful within 24hr.
Mask maker scared of getting sued LOL
You know it, otherwise why the explicit COVID-19 mention haha!
First thing that came to mind as well. You know some psychotic lefties would end up sueing them.
Yep. Some moron will wear their mask 24/7, even in the shower, and still get sick. "Impossibru! Who do I sue!"
That box is racist.
It's ok to be a white box.
Bigot REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Masks have always been to protect others from you.
If they don't stop incoming viruses...
They don't magically stop them from getting out.
Even the CDC says they are of no help.

Talk to the CDC then. :)
Won't refute because I have no need to.
My point stands, even the CDC knows basic masks are bullshit.
Nothing you posted proved that claim incorrect.
The ONLY reason I care about that study is the CDC is supplying it and saying something else.
So it’s like a one way mask?
If it's one way I guess you could wear it inside out?

Cool story, bro. Nothing you said refutes the fact that the CDC itself says they don’t work. I can point you to other studies that say the same thing.
It’s very clear you don’t understand basic English.
“Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.”
The CDC is run by China now?

No no, that’s all-right “alternative facts”
Put on your mask and breathe in your hot CO2 in 90 degree weather for hours.
I have very good 3M masks. They are in the box with the paint stripper and sanders, where they belong.
That's where mine are! I will confess, I did wear a respirator. Last Fall, when I was painting a quarter panel on the WifeMobile and applying 2k clear coat. And I have not worn one since.
Being forced to wear one at work at a warehouse. I highlighted the part where it says “not for occupational use”
Like the meme says: "Chain link fence to keep out mosquitos", lol.
creates a false psychological safe space.
That means that they NEVER worked in the first place and we were lied to from the beginning.

Blame their liability insurance underwriter on those words. Good job!!!
Clown world!
Safe drugs will kill you. Masks that don't work are mandatory. Economy has to be kept on life support despite lockdown not doing shit.
Okay, now I will drop this truth-bomb.

They will prevent projectile-vomiting, though!
Oh, wait.

Masks provide no protection from covid but it does not say if it will prevent you from spreading it.. which is already known
It says that because in close range the virus will get through the mask.
Masks are effective at reducing the range the virus gets projected because most of the energy collided with the mask.
The viruses eventually (for the most part) fall to the floor but a mask reduces the horizontal trajectory
It’s like a weak face condom
Same reason chicken poop is the best cure for chapped lips. It doesn't do anything but it sure does keep you from licking your lips!
