A Hungarian guy I know said one of the big problems with Hungary is that you should not go there if you have issues with alcohol since it's so damn cheap.
When I lived there (approx 20 years ago), it cost about 80 cents to get into a nightclub and beers were about 70 cents each. Mixed drinks similarly cheap. A great night could be had for under $10, including buying drinks for friends. It was the only time in my life when I was drinking almost every day because I had some Scottish and Irish friends and we'd have to have a beer or two on any given night. You would never want to stay home because the place was loaded with pretty ladies.
My father was also working there at the time. He was a rum and coke guy but they didn't have Bacardi anywhere so he started drinking red wine. A great bottle of red could be had for $3-$5. My dad made friends with the wine shop owner because he bought so much stuff, then he was getting the same quality wine in a plastic jug for about the equivalent of $1 a bottle.
The people there loved to party. There was such a beautiful spirit in the people, perhaps because they had just gotten out from under communism. Everyone was friendly. Lots of people insisted to buy me a drink when they found out I was American. I developed a great love for the country and for the people, and have been hoping and praying for their success ever since.
I was seriously considering buying a summer home there and wish that I had. I would move back in a heartbeat but I am married to a Serbian, so if we ever have to go to Plan B it is more likely that we will move to Slovenia.

I'd get a bottle of halfway decent red wine for like $2.50, drink the whole thing, and then still go out and drink more. There's actually multiple Morrisons clubs, so if you were quick and motivated, you could go from one to the other before happy hour was over. Yeah, I got hammered reeeeal cheap there haha.
