It's ironic, too. Seeing as how "per unit" of indoctrination teachers aren't really paid shit. Also, having been raised in the Detroit public school system, about I'd say about 75 percent are the hardcore type of indoctrination machines. With almost half of those are just filling a seat to collect a check, if you have seen the student body, they are more or less just glorified babysitters. The remaining 25 percent are actually passionate about teaching, but are at varying stages of "bitterness" usually proportional to how long they have been in the system. As time wears on them, they become cynical and you see their soul fading away, but they hang in there, for those one or two students that reach out and are thirsty for actual knowledge. That's what they live for at that point. A depressing existence, really.

As an aside, the standardized test scores were always atrocious, so they brought in their own crooked proctors that allowed the reading of the tests and tacitly gave you the answer by reading out the multiple choice answers, telling you what responses weren't the right fit. And STILL had shit scores. I witnessed this first hand during MAT 7 testing. And then I had to just accept the nature of "affirmative action" (read: state sponsored racism) as something that would "correct" some societal injustice. Keeping some of the more qualified students disenfranchised just because they were the wrong skin color. And you know what? Detroit is just as much as a shithole now as its ever been.

Go teach then- you can do a better job, no?

Don't want to come off as being too harsh, but I can tell you are pretty salty about my criticism of public school teachers. Aaaannnnd I don't have any sympathy if you are part of that machine. And FYI, that system is so fucked, it has permanently ruined my opinion of public education in general. So yeah, I have to home school, so I do have to teach, because people like you (assuming you are a salty teacher), who were supposed to advocate for me as a child, and children as a whole, toed the line and draw a check. And the real rub? Even though I have to "teach" and make curriculums, I STILL have to pay my taxes to fund a school system I don't even partake in. In school, I had to teach myself A LOT of shit, to the point school was a joke in high school, wasn't challenged, no one cared, and aced my tests. I did all the leg work, teachers just drew their checks. Then I had to deal with the indoctrination aspect on top of it all and actually had my grades impacted, because my accounts of history, went outside the bounds of the limited textbook passages. What should have been "extra credit" was actually harming the grade, because I dared to step outside the source material.

And maybe you didn't catch it my original passage, but teachers make shit and the system is corrupt at the mercy of the Peter Principle no less, so what about that would make me want to "rage against the machine?" It sure as fuck didn't help me from the student side. Remember those soul crushed teachers I mentioned? Yeah not for me. So, I am taking personal responsibility for educating not only myself and my contribution to the next generation. I took steps to be the change I wanted to see, by stepping outside the system.

Teaching isn't an easy job, but it's for dupes. And to the shitty ones, who draw the check and toe the line, poison the well of education that incurs a debt to society that will eventually come due, in spades of incompetence. Sorry, not fucking sorry.

Why does criticism all of a sudden put OP in a position to "go teach then"? Just because they don't have a passion for teaching doesn't mean they can't point out the problems.

I don't need to be a butcher to tell that a steak has gone bad.

Most teachers don't have the whole Summer off- there are mandatory inservices and continuing education seminars to attend. They're usually unpaid and they're 2-3 weeks long. M-F, from 8am to 4pm. There are other responsibilities teachers have that is outside the scope of teaching-- things such as lunch duty and bus duty.

Many of the after school activities that are run by teachers don't include compensation. And if they do-- it's usually a small stipend relative to the amount of hours put in.

Some teachers may have good intentions, but they are working within an evil system.

People seen to forget that. And they seem to confuse payment in the summer is simply how they want the checks cut for their salary, either 12 months or 9. Kinda rough when you spend all that money on the required education, and you have a job that really on pays for 3 quarters of the year, and you generally arent compensated for any hour over 40 in a given week.

That's because even with unions, a sizable number of public school teachers are too inept at business dealings to receive fair compensation for their work. Even those who are great at business dealings are stuck in a system where so many of their peers aren't and that always depresses wages.

Pro-tip: when you willingly put all this extra unpaid time in "for the children" you aren't actually doing it for the children... you're doing it so the administration can save a buck. And in some cases you're doing it so they can put that buck in their pockets or their friends pockets.

Inconvenient fact: proper education costs way more than anyone is willing to admit. Education for the masses ought to become a charity again. The catholics, and especially the jesuits, have it right. We should be willingly funding charitable education for the masses because if we don't do it, the government will continue to do it for us.

We need to start asking ourselves: can we afford to allow public schools to continue to indoctrinate people with no viable alternative.

It's not sometimes. It's M-F. If being a teacher is so fucking easy, why don't you do it? Why complain about it?

Because I'm not interested. Let's turn it around-- why don't they do something else?

-9
Mexicola1976 -9 points ago +2 / -11

Why should they? That's a pretty stupid argument. Most teachers are hardworking and care about their students. But you won't hear about that.

4
Cmchn 4 points ago +4 / -0

That's the argument you're making. I just dislike the absolute fetishization of the profession. You'd think it was literal torture by how people act, but almost all of the things they complain about are common to most professions. That's why people get annoyed.

8
TychoDurandal 8 points ago +9 / -1

This is an incorrect assumption.

Nice try.

-8
Mexicola1976 -8 points ago +1 / -9

What do you consider to be "sacred cows?" The nuclear family is a sacred cow, no? Liberals love tearing it down. What's the difference in your philosophy and their's?

9
elfmyself 9 points ago +9 / -0

No. From wikipedia: "A figurative sacred cow is a figure of speech for something considered immune from question or criticism, especially unreasonably so."

To claim the nuclear family to be a sacred cow, you have to demonstrate that it is unreasonable to hold it in high esteem.

Admittedly, if we close the public schools, then kids won't be fed propaganda by the state. Worth it...?

18
BillionsAndBillions 18 points ago +18 / -0

Back in the day, parents would get together and hire a teacher for their children. The teachers were directly employed by the parents.

6
TheInky 6 points ago +6 / -0

You know that isn't a bad idea

Many states have laws against that. A parent can teach a child but they aren’t allowed to have someone else teach their child. For example here in ND that is the law. They finally changed the law and you can have a music teacher teach music but it cannot be the entire day of school.

Definitely a "By the people, for the people" mentality. I very much like the sound of that! It does require a people with like-thinking minds however.

1
BillionsAndBillions 1 point ago +1 / -0

It was pretty simple. You just found like-minded parents in the community, and you hired a teacher that fit your needs. It's a great system. No wonder so many states outlawed it. I bet there are loopholes for homeschoolers though.

12
stonepony 12 points ago +12 / -0

Not to mention, Global Warming. Do we need half a million school buses picking up and dropping off kids every day??

8
TaggartCiscontinenta 8 points ago +8 / -0

Wait until one of the blue states makes it illegal to have firearms in the house if you home school. You know, to prevent homeschool shootings.

Agreed. Additionally, once the wives stop working so they can raise their children, men will start earning more, since the demand for labor will increase.

Hmm, closing schools will greatly decrease the leftist indoctrination of our youth. I think stopping communism from taking hold of the US will save many millions.
