Many states have laws against that. A parent can teach a child but they aren’t allowed to have someone else teach their child. For example here in ND that is the law. They finally changed the law and you can have a music teacher teach music but it cannot be the entire day of school.
It was pretty simple. You just found like-minded parents in the community, and you hired a teacher that fit your needs. It's a great system. No wonder so many states outlawed it. I bet there are loopholes for homeschoolers though.
Back in the day, parents would get together and hire a teacher for their children. The teachers were directly employed by the parents.

Definitely a "By the people, for the people" mentality. I very much like the sound of that! It does require a people with like-thinking minds however.
