My grandmother suffered from dementia before she passed and even though she wasn't capable of living on her own anymore or could have a conversation longer than a few minutes at a time, man could she crush crossword puzzles and word searches. She'd go through 5+ books a week.
My grandmother also tears through crossword puzzles, with an ink pen to be extra hardcore. Every morning for the last 300 years or so, without fail, her ritual was to have a cup of black coffee, eat a bowl of raisin bran, and do the crossword in the daily paper.
She still does one every morning at the care home, even on the days she can't remember her own name and her handwriting is mephistophelean runes. Some days she'll do the one in the paper before even getting out of bed, go out in the communal lobby naked, ask another resident if she can have today's crossword when they're done with their paper, and then do it again.
Just saying, knowing how to do a crossword isn't a sign of sanity.

Crosswords are hard, if you've never done a full weeks worth, or you're bad a trivia.
After doing enough of them you discover the words repeat, and the rest are literally just trivia questions/relevant to the puzzle theme. They are easier than Sudoku and you can quote me on that. Regardless of difficulty level, if it takes you more than 30 to 45 minutes to complete a puzzle, you just don't do them frequently enough.
So, saying that Joe is "Mentally Sharp" just because he can do crosswords is a Non Sequitur. Seriously, I'm wondering what this has to do with anything at all, who are they trying to impress here. Because he's got a long way to go if crosswords are all they can reference.
