Many of my inmate students believed and acted upon the belief that these types of inmates automatically deserved constant punishment (above and beyond being incarcerated). Inmates that otherwise tried to follow the rules thought it axiomatic that if you had the chance, you beat them up. The reasons for this varied, but child molesters, women beaters, elderly abusers, etc. really brought out the viciousness in inmates.
