This whole thing happened when I was still drinking the blue Kool-Aid, and even I was suspicious as hell about it. It was back when reddit was starting to get pretty insufferably leftist, but I recall the doubters still got pretty significant traction and there were several top-voted comments and posts pointing out how off the whole story was.
Nowadays, anyone doubting the official narrative would have their comment removed or be sitting at the bottom with -497 karma, and probably get banned, while the top 200 comments would all be "Islamophobia bad, white people bad, this is Drumpf's America" shit.
oh and all the universities that pledged to provide him free tuition after he graduates high school. Of course, that's before his father moved the entire family to Sudan to join the Islamist regime there. About a year later, clock boy said he misses Texas.
Didn't the kid literally show a teacher first too who told him to put it away and not show anyone else because it looked like a bomb, and then he deliberately went and showed it around to others until someone rightly reported it?
And then it turned out his father was a lawyer and Muslim activist, and the whole thing was likely a deliberate ploy.
And then his whole family immediately moved back to Pakistan or some shit once people started getting suspicious of his story.
I worked with a girl who was in his class. She said he was a complete dbag who loved playing the victim and that this was entirely driven by his parents.
