The crap this Communist pope spews is the reason I'm a protestant. I don't believe that anyone is an infallible representative of God...I believe that every person has their own direct, individual connection with God above. I don't need some 80-year-old Marxist interceding on my behalf.

It’s probably a sign of the times that a political figure is standing up for Christianity and the leader of the Catholic Church isn’t.

I feel the same. Archbishop cupich in Chicago supporting continued shutdown and saying he’ll ignore the president saying churches need to open. My local parish is going broke. Cupich following directions from limousine liberals that attend his church.

A person who denies Christ repeatedly and worships false religions, which are of devils, is not a Catholic. Francis is head of the Vatican II not the Catholic Church since you cannot be leader of a group you're not a member of. The Vatican is a liberal organization that has united the world religions in Assisi and consistently went against Catholic doctrine at every opportunity.

The rosary is endless repetitive idolotry to a dead lady that can't hear your prayers and couldn't do anything if she could.

And yes it's idolotry. Call it veneration, call it idolotry, whatever word exactly that you want to use to call the act, the act itself is a spiritual appeal to an entity other than God. That's idolotry by even the weakest definition of idolotry.

Protestants frequently tend to be even worse than Catholics when it comes to Popes.

Look at your church. Is there more than one location branded with your particular churches name? If so then there's a governing body presiding over them (or a "magistrate" as the Catholics put it) because it's too big for any one guy. And if there's a governing body somewhere up there is a guy in a fancy suit in a fancy office who is the church's final say in official church doctrine and dogma. You may not call him Pope, you may not call him "His holiness" or "infallible" but let's call a thing what it is he's the Pope of your church, anything less is lying to yourself.

And as far as that goes, if there's a sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church there's a public name and face I can point to and say "you're responsible for this" in the Protestant Churches their Pope is a namless faceless guy behind a curtain that won't become named or seen if there was a sexual abuse scandal on his watch.

So there's that: something to be said for the guy that's the public face of scandal whether he wants to be or not as opposed to the man behind the curtain. And at least Catholics are that honest about having a Pope. Protestants can really learn a lot from that.

To all Protestants: say what you want about the Pope, it's more than fair and you're probably right but careful what you say lest you impune your own church's leadership

Benedict # stillmypope

2
SimplePede 2 points ago +3 / -1

The last thing Benedict did as Pope was leave the results of his internal investigations into priests fucking children. There are 2 possibilities:

  1. He knew what was in it and resigned because he knew he wasn't for for office because his name was there

  2. He resigned because the whole system was so corrupt he wanted nothing to do with it.

If he was in the clear and had nothing to lose there's no reason Benedict couldn't stay in office and release the results. It would have vindicated him as a good Pope. That's not what happened, so Benedict is/was full of shit

That's why I stopped being Catholic

1
NvJohansson 1 point ago +1 / -0

Have you already forgotten how corrupt the deep state is? They dont have to have any true facts on you to try and destroy you and get rid of you. Have you missed the last 3 years? Its not everybody who has Trumps stamina to endure all that bs, furthurmore fighting soros, obama, clinton and the deepstate cartels' lies for years would have caused much more damaged than anything else.

Fucking children huh? With an argumnent like that, you were never a Catholic, you're just like every other poser who says bs like "l left being a republican because Trump did blah blah blah". Enjoy your new islamic faith.

From what I heard they were just using Benedict for cover. They had him as the conservative figure head with no power and they were running their nasty canal around him. He refused to be a puppet. He made them own their filth by stepping down. That’s the theory. I don’t know if it’s true or if it was the right answer.

I gotta concur with Sarlaccpitmaster.

1
MerlynTrump 1 point ago +1 / -0

It makes sense that eventually there would be a Pope Emeritus though. Yeah it was traditionally for life, but so too was the position ofbishop and and now bishops resigning due to age became commonly accepted (it's even mandatory now once they hit 75). I think the difference between a pope resigning and a dad resigning is that canon law allows the pope to resign and has provisions for priests being dispensed from the obligations of the priesthood. But for a parent to "resign" is something the Church cannot allow since those duties come from natural law and the Church cannot dispense from natural law.

Question for Catholics: What happens if there’s a church teaching you don’t agree with or an edict that you disagree with from a pope?

I don’t mean any offense, I’m just curious about how a Catholic would wrestle with it.

A pope can speak in both a fallible and infallible manner. When they are speaking in an infallible manner, it is called "ex cathedra". Using the US government as an example, Trump can say he wants Voter ID but it isn't law because he didn't give an executive order. If Trump does require Voter ID through an executive order then it does become law as long as the order was constitutional and lawful.

It is somewhat similar with the pope. He can't just say whatever he wants and it is automatically law. Any statement or order must be lawful by the Church's standards. Another thing is that the Catholic Church automatically revokes the position of a Catholic if they commit heresy after having been informed of their error or if their error is so great and obvious that it cannot be ignored. Thus they would be ineligible for pope whether before being elected or after as long as they adhere to whatever heresy they teach.

The Catholic Encyclopedia, “Heresy,” 1914, Vol. 7, p. 261: “The pope himself, if notoriously guilty of heresy, would cease to be pope because he would cease to be a member of the Church.”

This is because the person in question have broken the law much like how felons in the US have broken the law and become ineligible for office.

Much like the US adheres to the Constitution, all Catholics adhere to a code of laws and ethics, the Word of God, regardless of their position so the only real disagreement would be when someone goes against the Word. Otherwise its either an opinion or, if the pope was speaking "ex cathedra", an order that all Catholics should obey if it is lawful. When the order is lawful then everyone must obey it because it is the correct interpretation of the Word of God according to the promise of Jesus Christ.

It should be noted that not everyone who err becomes a heretic but if what you say conflicts with something as basic as the Apostle's Creed then you have become a heretic.

1
DrVSGGEOTUSPhD 1 point ago +1 / -0

Did JB ever respond to the Dubia?

4
MerlynTrump 4 points ago +4 / -0

There are different levels of teaching. The pope's job is not to make teaching up but to teach that which has been passed down to him through previous generations of bishops from the Apostles and ultimately from Christ (this is called "Tradition", i.e. Christ taught the Apostles, the Apostles taught their disciples and so on through the ages). This tradition is authoritative since it is Christ's teaching. Then the pope would interpret or define the teaching to apply it to new circumstances that may arise (such as the discovery of the ovum) much as the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution. This is done in formal documents.

Then there are things that are pastoral, such as a sermon or homily, where the pope is giving a spiritual reflection or applying a teaching to every day life. These are to be respected but are not binding, though he may be repeating doctrine that is itself binding (e.g. if the pope says in a Sunday homily that it is wrong to kill an innocent person, his homily is not authoritative but the teaching that killing someone is wrong is authoritative.

Then there is the rare case where a pope "solemnly defines" a doctrine. This is where he formally interprets a point of doctrine in a way that is binding and definitive.

Finally there are mixed cases of teaching and personal opinion. For example if Pope Francis says that human activity causes global warming and that Christians have an obligation to take care of the environment and consider the impact of their activities on the poor, then the first part of that statement is his opinion while the second part is him repeating accepted Church teaching.

The Pope at any moment he chooses could say

Ex Cathedra: Jesus' warning on harming children is explicit and dire it's better to have a millstone around your neck and be thrown into the abyss than to harm a child. It doesn't matter what a former Pope said, it doesn't matter what any council said nothing overrides Jesus nothing changes his warning, it's wrong to shelter priests that screw children. Pedopriests have no welcome and no safety in this church you will be found, you will be defrocked, you will be turned in to the authorities.

But he doesn't.

And until that day comes that's why I can't call myself Catholic. Grandma you might not like that choice but I know you understand.

1
DrVSGGEOTUSPhD 1 point ago +1 / -0

what's your beef with St F?

1
SoldierofKek 1 point ago +1 / -0

I see St. Francis as basically a medieval hippie. If he were alive today, he'd probably be a member of Antifa or some gay liberation theology crap...which is why leftist clergy like him. I've seen it up close and personal. I went to a Catholic high school which was the result of a merger of a Carmelite and a Franciscan high school. The Carmelites struck me as well disciplined men of deep faith. The Franciscans took their faith about as seriously as their founder...that is not at all. It also makes sense that the Carmelites would be more disciplined because they started as soldiers. They were crusaders who went to the holy land to liberate it from the muslims. As the story goes, the Virgin Mary appeared to them and this group of soldiers became a monastic order. I'm perfectly open to changing my perception of St. Francis, but I think there's a reason why leftists are drawn to him.

Practically, we can understand what He told the Apostles, because that's what we call the Gospels. The first four books of the NT are littered with Christ correcting and teaching His Apostles. Far into His ministry they were still confused as to who He was (simply a prophet, the suffering Messiah, or the conquering Messiah? In Judaism those were taught to be two separate people).

Secondly, who gave authority to the Apostles? Christ. And who gives Christ His authority? The Father. John 1:1 explicitly states that God, Christ, and the Word were together and one. Therefore the authority of men, which was given by Christ, cannot lord over the written Word. Christ also testifies to this fact in John 5:39.

Be wary of any man pretending they have special knowledge/authority of salvation or atonement. That belongs to Christ alone, as it is written.
