I'm not so sure about that. It takes far less energy to move a bullet through a person than to burn a hole in them with a laser. And for energy density gunpowder is much more efficient than the best batteries. Big ass lasers really shine though for the Navy since they can be run directly off nuclear reactors.
In the future, people will look back on our time and marvel at how we lobbed lumps of lead at each other.

I dont think we can make accurate predictions based upon fiction written in a time where projectile weapons were the only option.
The thinking is that energy-based weapons can be stopped by energy-based shields. Projectile weapons can penetrate energy-based shields.
