Yes - even if the states want to squabble for years over how they'll run their voting for state level elections, we should be able to have Voter ID required for Federal elections at the very least.

Voter ID required for Federal elections at the very least. Feds are in charge of fed elections in constitution

Modern_Times 12 points ago +12 / -0

You need ID to shop in Costco and Sam's Club.

6
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

Yep. One free shopping day for America !

AlohaSnackbar 7 points ago +7 / -0

That presupposes that elections are required for the states ec votes to be distributed. The states could distribute their ec votes based on dick length, and it would be fully constitutional.

There are ways to get voter ID on a national level, but it isn't through direct executive action, but rather through the justice department suing under the equal protection clause, as states that don't require reasonable ID and/or don't have high numbers of illegals have their votes and representation diluted. This is a favorable path because as you may have noticed, the liberal states voters are harmed by not having voter ID, and the conservative states are harmed by not having illegals.

The next easiest path would be for the DOJ to sue states under the interstate commerce clause. It's a little tougher, but not impossible to argue that a lack of voter ID is unduly affecting the economies of some states due to illegals voting.

but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Election Regulations

ARTICLE I, SECTION 4, CLAUSE 1 The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Pretty sure the president can’t control how states handle elections. That’s a very distinct limit on his powers, iirc. I would love to see Voter ID, because it’s desperately needed to limit corruption, but I worry about the second-order effects of that expansion of presidential powers

35
splink 35 points ago +39 / -4

He can't tell them how to run state elections, but he could have say in Federal level ones.

13
Miserable_company 13 points ago +13 / -0

Okay, that’s fair. How does that work then with the electoral college where a state election chooses where electoral votes go? Is that considered a state election where he has power, or a federal?

7
Futuramawe 7 points ago +7 / -0

No he can't. Federal elections are elections of sovereign states, and not directly an election of the people within that state.

The people vote for their state representatives. The representatives vote in federal elections. That's how the Constitution lays it out.

The only way to implement voter ID is through an amendment to the Constitution.

11
americathegr888 11 points ago +11 / -0

Instead, he should send all these foreigners home so they can no longer vote 90% left in those elections.

9
Futuramawe 9 points ago +9 / -0

I actually think this issue is large enough that it DOES require a Constitutional amendment.

  1. Federal ID required in ALL federal and state elections
  2. Ballot harvesting is outlawed
  3. Mail in voting is outlawed except in cases where it is verified that voter is unable to be physically present at voting booth (military, disabled, sick, etc.)
3

Strap them on a rocket with Ilhan up front, as he says.

12
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 12 points ago +16 / -4

ALL federal elections are controlled by FEderal govt.

11
ArdentGrasshopper 11 points ago +11 / -0

The states send electors. The electors are determined by the states - voting for the electors isn't really required, although no state dares to just appoint them directly.

8
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 8 points ago +9 / -1

Yep. federalism and Republicanism is a great concept!!

2
Barthaneous 2 points ago +5 / -3

He should since its a federal election. Not a state election.

7
Futuramawe 7 points ago +7 / -0

A federal election is an election where states vote, not individuals within the state.

You vote for representatives of your state. Your representatives vote in federal elections however they wish.

-1
horizontal_curve -1 points ago +2 / -3

No, that's not how it works. Just because "federal" is in the name doesn't mean Trump has absolute dictatorial power to make up whatever election rules he wants. That's insane and reveals your extremely poor understanding of... anything to do with politics.

Read the fucking Constitution.

1
Barthaneous 1 point ago +1 / -0

The point is once your nation begins to divide itself one must as president to make a decision on which way the nation should go. Lincoln by reason of being on the defense end , attacked and destroyed the Confederate states.

The Democrats created the Confederate States and now the Democrats have made a tresspass or breach in power as governors. Time for president to take full control and

Clean House

1
Imzadi 1 point ago +1 / -0

The Democrats threw that out the window with their most recent bill that allows mail in voting across the country and gets rid of all voter id. The Democrats have shown that it is now OK for the federal government to manage elections.

0
horizontal_curve 0 points ago +2 / -2

This might be a shock to you, but Congress and the presidency do not have the same powers.

Democrats in Congress can rightfully propose and enact legislation to do many, many things that Trump cannot do on his own.

1
Imzadi 1 point ago +1 / -0

The President also doesn't have the authority to grant work permits to people in the country illegally and yet we have DACA.

Trump has the same pen and phone that Obama had.

You need to show a membership ID at Costco! Voter suppression!!!! REEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

3
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yep …. Everything should be free to everyone ……… Interesting tid bit. No membership necessary to get your prescription filled at Costco…… and they take most ins

5
BrewSwillis 5 points ago +5 / -0

In Michigan, you also don't need a membership to purchase alcohol there........ but, you do need an ID!! 😆

3
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Wow. Interesting. I’m gonna ask about that at my Costco next time.

12
AppRep 12 points ago +12 / -0

Democrats will fight tooth and nail to stop this.

It would be an easy fix to hold voting in a federal building where you need a real ID to enter and still give the shill democrats the feeling that they don't need an ID to vote, just need a federal compliant ID to enter the federal government building.

5
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

This isn’t as easy as you guys think. If he signs an order it’ll immediately get struck down in the federal courts and likely go to the Supreme Court. I’m not sure they’ll side with him on it as voting is handled at the state level. The federal government doesn’t have jurisdiction except by law.

3
rbobjones69 3 points ago +3 / -0

At least for federal elections. I don't know if he is able for state and local elections unlss we are being deprived of our civil rights, which we are.

3
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 3 points ago +4 / -1

Yep. Only federal. In theory we could have two ballots. One fed one other !!

3

The Real ID requirements for driver's licenses are pretty secured I think. We can just use those! No need to even make new IDs!

3
unicornpoop 3 points ago +5 / -2

Put in a biometric print scan when you vote. Wouldn't that knock out the bulk of voter fraud even if it doesn't address voter ID?

2
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 2 points ago +3 / -1

I could go for that. With iris scan…

4
Miserable_company 4 points ago +5 / -1

Hmm. Does that mean we’d all have to have an optical scan and a maintainer registry with the federal government? Maybe that’s just an icky and unavoidable part of it and not much different than fingerprints, but at least that’s not automatic but something you opt-in to through certain jobs or engaging in criminal activity.

3
Trump_2024 3 points ago +3 / -0

We need to make ID's for voting free if it is going to be mandatory! It's the only way this is going to be accepted by both the left and the right. It needs to be done now, rather than later. Hell, you could even incentivize voting by giving them extra money back on their tax returns for participating in their civic duties allowed to them in this great country.

2

1
OrdusMaleus 1 point ago +2 / -1

While I agree with the sentiment, this leaves out disabled and some elderly who physically cant go to the polls in traditional ways.

Absentee ballots are a thing and have been for decades.

I would say make any ballot recieved have to go through verification and checks just like you have to go through for SSDI and SSI.

2
YourDaddyKnowsBest [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

have to go through for SSDI and SSI.

Voting is a right. … absentee ballots are not. However , I can understand that exception and the verification process.
