I've heard it recommended that if you intend to use a pistol against a brown bear that you file down the front sights first.

That way it doesn't hurt so bad when the bear shoves it up your ass!

a .357 would probably sting a bear ass enough for it to run like hell, maybe?

4
brother_red 4 points ago +5 / -1

Maybe. Probably not though.

If you ever get a chance, go have a look at a full size brown bear.

There is no way I'd be trying to fend one off with anything less than .50BMG!

I know. Those grizzlies can be up to a ton I believe. I'm not sure there's a reasonably sized handgun that will take one out in one shot.

brother_red 4 points ago +4 / -0

I mean, there is one story out there of a grizzly being taken with a .22 - but that must have been pure shot placement into an eyeball or something.

If a bear is charging me, I'm gonna be too busy shitting my pants to get any kind of clean shot off!

I used to carry a 44 mag but I can get rounds off quite a bit faster with this. Hopefully murder bear will get a lead sandwich before running me over

Murder bear!

Your logic seems sound. More shots...

But I think the "take a slower friend" method would be more reliable!.

10mm is the boom of doom. It killed Superman and made nuclear nonproliferation treaties obsolete. Be careful fren.

2
AFandAM 2 points ago +2 / -0

Perhaps, but it trembles at the feet of .22 ratshot.

Wenzelldo [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Haha! love it! I'm gonna use that line the next time I'm at the range

I've always been fascinated with 10mm but could never bring myself to buy one. There aren't any bears here in Texas. Where are you at, OP?

11
Wenzelldo [S] 11 points ago +11 / -0

I’m in Alaska

2
Mavdick96 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, holy shit, you'll definitely need to bear medicine.

GibsonDawg 9 points ago +9 / -0

Use it for boar. Pistol hunts for boar are super fun. Or just use it as a paper hole puncher. Get one pede!

In Texas “had” many fine examples of the 10mm 3 glocks and a oldskool S&W latest edition being an Iver Johnson long-slide 1911 that I really enjoyed shooting and was surprised with the quality vs money out of pocket - I’ll miss them all due to a boating accident.

But can confirm the best mm 10mm works well on wild hogs, Axis deer, Nutria ect ect

ohwell316 4 points ago +4 / -0

Get 2. I have a Delta Elite and a S&W 610.

2
ApocolipticPePe 2 points ago +2 / -0

I had the S&W 1006 I hear that not only can it be lost in a boating accident but it can also be used as an anchor on said boat should the need arise

TD_Covfefe_Crusader 7 points ago +7 / -0

10mm is best millimeter. That's my woods gun too.

2
Wenzelldo [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

love the 10mm. The holster is made by Diamond D leather here is alaska and is really comfortable hiking all day

sir_rockness 7 points ago +8 / -1

What kind of 10mm ammo do you load up for a bear? Hollow points are garbage on tough hides and ball ammo doesnt stop em..

Do you have some kinda controlled expansion ammo for it?

8
ApocolipticPePe 8 points ago +8 / -0

Look up that buffalo bore mono-metal it’s classified as there dangerous game cartridge

5
sir_rockness 5 points ago +6 / -1

Good deal.

I cant tell you how many folks tell me they carry a .45 in the woods with hollow points to protect themselves from dangerous game.

Then I've had other folks tell me bear mace is better than a pistol to protect yourself from bear...

Neither of them seem to understand anything about ammo.

I_Love_45-70_Gov 5 points ago +5 / -0

My brother carries a 9mm Ruger w/hollow points for black bear defense.

I figure a pissed mama bear might eventually bleed out, but not after having a quick meal first

tiwal 4 points ago +4 / -0

I use grizzly big bore cast lead in. I honestly believe cast lead is what you need.

1
Wenzelldo [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

I use buffalo bore 220 grain solid hard cast 1200 fps/me 703 ft lbs

40 cal for home defense 10 mm for bear protection

Why not 10mm for both? You never know when a bear is going to try a "no knock raid" on your refrigerator, friend. LOL

5
Mael 5 points ago +5 / -0

What ammo do you use in the 10 ? I like Underwood myself.

6
ApocolipticPePe 6 points ago +6 / -0

Buffalo Bore 10mm mono-metal isn’t cheap but my god does it preform well - it comes out of Glock 40 like a howitzer

It's stopped Grizzlies in Alaska and black bear are well within its capabilities. We have a lot of black bear here in Oregon and I spend a lot of time in the woods, so I regularly carry a 10mm.

10mm is a much tamer round than the 454. Recoil wise it's closer to a .357 magnum. .44 magnum used to be considered the "bear" minimum for Grizzlies but after several successful stops with the 10mm people are rethinking that. The Sirius Dog Sled Patrol in Greenland is issued Glock 20s for use against polar bears. They were previously issued Sig 9mms which were found to be ineffective against the bears.

At first I read this as beer protection, heh!

Not sure I would count on any pistol for bear protection, but better than nothing, for sure!

Realist79 -2 points ago +2 / -4

Bear spray>10mm for bear protection.

Have you ever asked yourself honestly, how much protection do the bears actually need? I suppose a 10mm would be a good choice, but bears protect themselves fairly well. What are you protecting them from? So many questions! /s

1
Wenzelldo [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

haha nice. Their murder mittens protect themselves pretty well
