When I was in we trained a lot. I remember it because it was always on an off day and I was always pissed.
I wonder why the Navy doesn't use cheaper civilian contractors to man these posts. is against regulations? Maybe contractors cannot be trusted with this essential but boring job?
Why pay a contractor when we do it as part of our responsibilities? They can make us work all damn day and still pay us the same amout as working for 2 hours. Some bases do have base police manning the gates alongside military guards.
I don't like it, but it seems like the feds like to use contractors when they can in stead of military..for example on bases the food is often made by contractors, right? I guess the total price for military, i.e. overall compensation package, plus what the government paid to recruit / train / house etc the military people makes them pricey on a per-hour basis? I'm not lobbying for it or anything, I just thought they tried to cheap out when they can by paying some company to hire the cheapest, no benefit-having people they can find

regular army in the CF have to do a swim qual too.. at least I did, and I was Artillery.
Some infantry units are dual-purpose, like the Ceremonial Guard (GGFG) who wears those fancy red coats with big black bearskin hats.. the march around on the Hill all summer to put on a show, it's a throwback like you mentioned to a time long gone.. They've got the military band going and all.
It's like being one of those Marines who guards the tomb of the unknown soldier. You're more keen for the drill, discipline, deportment, than you are for real field exercise. The units obviously do 'normal 4G Warefare' training now, and I'm not 100% sure but I think regular armies are moving away from cold-war era training in the field w/ trenches (which was like training for the Soviets using World War 1/2 foxholes and OPs lol).. to urban warfare, CQB, house-to-house and support logistics.. strike forces are probably some of the only real conventional forces we would recognize, and I think the Marines are closer to seals than they are a regular National Guardsman, but they're still just infantry to me with their own support units who also call themselves Marines, so the average Marine can be anything from Sigs to Intel to truck driver to coffee bitch. I'm sure some Marines rarely see much water and others are in it every day. Such is 21st century warfare.

That is an important distinction. Most Muslims are born into the religion and are threatened with death if they question Islam or think about leaving. Probably the best course is to educate the masses about it - from a historical and factual perspective so at least some of the more astute Muslims can see Islam is clearly a creation of man and not God, and perhaps will adjust their beliefs accordingly.
