Excellent dig. He had no duty to retreat. The "urban youths" were rioting and assaulting any white person they saw. If he retreated he would have been attacked again. He had reasonable fear for his life. Can fire not kill? Werent they lighting buildings on fire and beating every white person they saw? By going into his shop and locking the door he already had retreated. It is reasonable to assume that any person breaking in during a riot was not there to say hello.
