Hello

As the title states I'm completely new to guns and pretty damn ignorant. I've been wanting to get a lever action Marlin csbl. It appears to be more of a collector's gun and is quite expensive and difficult to find.

As a compromise I was looking at getting the Henry big boy x model (.357 mag). Its cheaper and appears to be more available.

I'm curious as to how easy it is to get a smaller barrel? The csbl barrel is 16 1/2" and the henry is 17.4". No matter which way I go I'm gonna want to get a modified barrel. If I got the csbl I would be looking to get it threaded and for the henry i would be looking to get a smaller barrel.

Is this even legal to get modifications to your gun if its within regulation? Thanks for the help in advance and sorry if this isn't appropriate for the donald.win

Nothing under 16” is allowed unless you get a tax stamp from the ATF. Are you going to run a silencer? If not look at the Henry Big Boy .357 carbine. The new x models have side loading, the others will not. The x are also the only series to have threaded barrels. I have the carbine, one of my favorite all purpose rifles. Excellent weapon. I only have the 45-70 in the x model but I wanted to run a silencer on that big a caliber. It all depends on what you want the weapon to do. Many guns, many purposes.

I do want a silencer because I've read they are designed to prevent ear damage when using a gun inside. If worse comes to worse and I need to defend my wife and kids I dont wanna go def in the process.

I was leaning toward 16 1/2" or 16 1/4" so I'm still comfortably inside regulation but a small as possible.

That gun is almost perfect. If anything I would wanna change the lever to be less... quirky. Thanks for the link!

-edit- I just realized it doesnt have a side loader and that is a bit of a deal breaker. I'm not big on the tube fed design

Obligatory comment. Ar15, glock 19, Ruger 10/22 will be the most customizable guns on the market. Lever actions are awesome for shoot outs at the OK Corral but can lack after market support. But you can have your barrel cut and threaded by a gunsmith rather than buying a new barrel.

Are you just set on a lever action type rifle? You can definitely modify it any way you want with the parts you can find online for it. There is no law that prevents you from swapping barrels, getting a trigger job etc etc....amy states I can think of with even the most draconian laws wouldn’t prevent you from doing anything sensible to those weapons.

Get ya an AR-15 and there is endless customization you can do to that platform ;-)

I'm dead set on lever action. I mostly just wanna shoot at the range. Idk why but i love the aesthetic of a lever action. I shot one of my friends at the range and it just felt right.

They are super fun to shoot. Enjoy whatever you get! Glad you can still exercise that freedom at this point.
