In the law of the land in the USA the police are not required to obey illegal orders....ever. If the order is illegal the police must refuse. If they don't then they are as guilty as the person giving the illegal order. Period!. Mayors governors are not above the law. Although it appears many of them think they are. A police force the 'just obeys orders without thinking is useless. And likely criminal.
And they have, and, because they are human beings, they will mostly continue to do so. "Ordinary Men" chronicles the german police told to extract jews from Polish Ghettos were told the work would be gruesome and to step forward if they wanted to opt out. 12 of the 500 opted out and were sent back to Berlin without consequence. A few more opted out when they began to murder the women, children, and elderly from the ghettos, but most continued on with the genocide. Don't think we are incapable of this.
It's a wife's job to tell her husband when he's acting crazy. It's a husband's job to acknowledge that but still continue acting crazy if he thinks it's necessary.
If arrests don't happen, or is theater, even once, that's above the law. When rule of law fails, equity (or chancery for fellow pedes across the pond) is a great alternative.
You’re forgetting that many cops don’t work for elected sheriffs—the city cops work for the chief, appointed by the lib mayor. If they refuse to follow the mayor’s directives, they’ll be fired. Ultimately, both the riots and the killing are due to the mayor’s flaccid management. Breakdowns in community respect of LEOs, and lawlessness by the citizens.
Same BS occurred in my city of South Bend. Mayor Pete essentially neutered our cops on use of force, thugs know this, which causes a deep disrespect of cops, thus terrible things happen as a result. Did Pete stand up for our LEOs? Of course not.
Yesterday in SB, a 17yo kid got into an argument with another kid, both armed. One raises his gun and the other shoots him dead. Where’s the riots there? It’s sad, but this is freaking normal for a lot of us!
All these cases are a result of the breakdown of respect and order on all sides. How do we restore peace? Respect on all sides.
With these dem mayors, I don’t have hope that it’ll happen.
Personally, I agree with Mayor Pete (probably only thing that I’d agree with him on) that cops should be neutered in the sense you wrote. Cops have become way too militarized and that needs to change. I would prefer a two tiered system for cops, your run of the mill cop gets nothing but pepper spray. The tier above that are highly trained, particularly in de-escalation and allowed to have guns. This second tier would be called in to deal with actual armed or suspected armed individuals.
I know the argument will be, “you don’t think police should be able to protect themselves”, and my response to that it isn’t a matter of protecting themselves, they signed up to do a job voluntarily, and know the risks involved. If they don’t want to accept the risks of not having a gun, don’t sign up. Besides, my two tiered idea solves that problem.
You feel this way BC cops, especially city cops, are essentially the attack dogs of lib mayors. The mayors sit in their towers and take no responsibility for anything while the city runs wild and LEOs are targeted each and every day.
We should all demand action more from our mayors. Vote em out if they’re killing us! Instead, cities continue to vote lib and we continue to have to deal with the fallout. Our only control in stopping these killings is to vote out blue leaders and restore respect to authority.
Agreed that the mayors and city councilors have blame in this - particularly with approving the budget for purchasing more weaponry. However, the buck stops with the police. The mayors aren’t out there killing citizens, the mayors aren’t out there conducting no knock raids, the mayors aren’t out harassing citizens for being at the park with their daughter or shutting down gyms because people are working out. The police should have the mental faculties to know right and wrong, and not be abusive to citizens. Mayors can issue all the decrees they want, but good luck enforcing them if the police won’t do their bidding.
The evidence shows that the vast majority of police will do that bidding.
Lib cities, mostly lib cops. They hire from the general population. If on average they are stupid most cops will be stupid. Minneapolis has circled the common sense and intellectual drain.
I would like to know the extent to which our police forces have been infiltrated by communists. It seems like a no brainer that if Soros and his ilk want to foment race-based violence, they need a compliant "police" force to assist in pushing the strategy forward.
Just like the comminusts have infiltrated every other civil body, they have probably infiltrated police forces all over the country, especially in Democrat-run Plantation Cities like Minneapolis.
A good amount I bet. I think another issue is the heavy militarization of the police force. We have so much military surplus that gets sold to municipalities, who then need to justify their need for the purchase, as well as have employees that know how to use that weaponry. You then have police departments hiring people straight out of the military since they know how to use the weaponry, and they have policing experience - although it’s from in a war zone.
What needs to happen is a demilitarization of police departments, mayors/governors that are not afraid to implement changes that will be unpopular with the police force, and a “cooling off” period from hiring those coming out of the military before being able to be hired.
Cops made a huge ass mistake going after their supporters with the lock down. The criminals always hated them of course.. So now they have lost both sides. They should have just arrested the local and state politicians giving the illegal orders.
I think graduating with a Bachelors in English is more difficult than a criminal justice degree. A CJ degree is right next to communications degrees, which is what a good chunk of people get when they don’t have the will or brain power to do other majors.
Don’t care anymore. Supporting cops seems like a wrong move. The left hates them, and the cops harass the right. I’m done giving donations to their causes.
The cops went after people wanting to feed their families. That’s bullshit. They went after people social distancing on the beech. Bullshit. If cops want to be bullshit, let them deal with the absolute lack of respect from all corners of the population.
Anyone want to call me out, I get it you’re in a cop family. I’m giving my unfiltered opinion.
It may be a minority that participate in bad behavior, but the rest of them let it happen. If they cant police themselves, they have no business policing us.
When was the last time a cop testified against a murdering piece of shit like gauvin? At 3 pieces of shit watched him do it. Why is their never body cam footage?
No, bit there’s certainly dirty cops in every department. Calling out a blatant bad egg across the country isnt going to lose him his job.
I had a run in locally where a cop was trying to instigate me when i was not breaking any laws. I called the chief and he asked me the name of the officer which i did not have at the time, and As I described the situation, he says “i know who it is”... just by his bad actions. Hmmm....
Definitely this. I had an Incident a few years back. My inlaws have a weekly dinner gathering. We had my wife ,SIL, BIL, and MIL in an apartment having dinner. TV was on but not loud. Neighbors had a party and police got called. Officers got the unit number wrong and showed up to our dinner. They demanded everyone leave except the lease owners. They didn't even try to ask questions or be polite. Just knocked and then started issuing orders.
My inlaws were going to comply. I went to the officers asked for a badge number, what authority they had to give orders, what evidence they had against us, what law they were citing, and asked them to call my lawyer( I have a legal shield type service I subscribe to, nothing fancy). They left. 10mins later they came back and apologized for having the wrong unit.
There are many companies that provide different versions of the service and it's best to research what fits your needs the most.
Think of it like Lawyer insurance. You pay a monthly fee in case you need a lawyer. Most services will talk to cops via phone. Some may even deploy a lawyer to you depending on the situation. If you need a contract reviewed they will do it. If you need a legal letter sent they will do it.
The plan I have has a cap on court time which increases the longer I'm a member. I also get a card that has their number and instructions for any cops that may be detaining or arresting me. It's come in handy from time to time. I've never been arrested, but I've had to deal with cops stepping out of line, shitty landlords, and one time a threat from my cable company. All handled for me. I also have an LLC that that provides some side money. And they help with customer disputes too.
Yes, we know Doc. Nurses are all totally based, and what we saw from cops in Seattle, California, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and elsewhere is just a small minority.
It takes a real big guy to step up and post on twitter while putting nothing on the line himself. If he calls out Ohio cops, or his own boss for shit, then that will mean something.
Until then, cops are a worthless, protected class of people that throw normal people under the bus to protect other cops. Always be respectful, of course, but never count on those fucks during a crisis.
I hate this argument. Unless you’re directly involved or witnessed an incident within your own department, you have no recourse against them. I could work in the next precinct over from a terrible incident, or in large departments on the same shift, and not be involved in whatever bad action was taken.
Did I let the bad thing happen? How can I testify to an event I was not present for?
Yep, now it’s a classic the enemy of my enemy is my friend. The police have only themselves to blame for uniting liberals and conservatives against them.
I hope each and every last one of them. Each and every last cop and especially the fat doughnut gobbling oinkers that actually enforced or would enforce these bullshit made-up laws.
Because you know what cops? You swore to uphold the CONSTITUTION. THAT'S your Boss. Not the mayor, not the governor, not even the President your Boss is the CONSTITUTION and the moment these quarantine shutdowns went into effect there's not a single ONE OF YOU that should have lifted a finger to enforce it until it was made clear by the courts that it falls in line with what the document you swore to uphold agrees with. The moment those orders were given the very first question out of each and every last one of your piggy snouts should have been "Is this constitutional?"
I'm the taxpayer. I pay your salary. You will consider this.
None of them.... because those assholes think they were doing the right thing. Those assholes are the ones advocating releasing criminals from prisons. Those assholes have an agenda...
Probably not a lot, proportionally speaking. The kind of cops who would crack down on the peaceful, law abiding citizens probably wish they were in the riots, cracking skulls and firing tear gas.
Let’s take a step back. Our own president and staff have been harassed ,jailed and financially ruined by federal law enforcement. No accountability.
The covid lockdown exposed our out of control state and local law enforcement doing the bidding of crazy politicians. No accountability
Now this. This happens all the time in every part of the country, every social economic condition and race. The police have been militarized to the point some could be mistaken for a small countries military.
The sad fact is, most cops would turn their head away from what this murderer did. If questioned they would say "I don't remember. I didn't see anything."
I appreciate what cops do and sacrifice for the community, but a good deal of what they get is response to their blue wall and code of silence.
Until we return to vigorously enforcing property crime laws, the gradual rot of our relationship with the police will continue. Property ownership is central to the western, Judaeo-Christian concept of freedom. How can you ever be free, if you have to beg for everything you have, either to get it or to keep it? Being robbed, or having your property destroyed by vandals, is a direct threat to a persons freedom. It should be legal to meet that threat with violence, both from the property owner and the police.
Liberal politicians have failed these officers in an attempt to appease a splinter community of malcontents who will only truly be appeased by the destruction of western civilization. We don't need more appeasement, we need to remind these fools that civilization can fight back.
Cops are doing a job. They have families to feed, just like everyone else. And a cop refusing to do his/her job faces far more serious repercussions than just about any other type of employee. It makes no sense to hate on them. If you're gonna attack someone, attack the lawmakers and politicians the police are required to obey.
It's funny, because 2 months ago I would have written a comment exactly like this one, but my thinking has changed. I have always been a huge supporter of cops, knowing they do a very difficult and important job. Unfortunately I don't feel this way anymore.
Cops across this country have been given a test over the past 2 months. When push comes to shove, will they actually protect the people they are sworn to defend, or will they carry out the orders of governors and mayors who are clearly abusing their power? Unfortunately many of them failed this test miserably. Just following orders doesn't cut it. They became complicit in the systematic abuse of power and for that, they've lost my respect.
I applaud the sheriffs and other police organizations who took a principled stand and said they won't enforce illegal lockdown orders, but there have been far too few of these.
Sorry but your numbers are way off. This has been going on in virtually every state and city. In NYC alone thousands of people have been ticketed.
It's not only people who have been arrested or ticketed, it's everyone else who have been harassed or just threatened. Think of that, law abiding citizens are being threatened by the police for just living their life. Not cool.
Better than making them up entirely, which is what you did. It’s likely not calculable is the honest answer. Any is too many. But over a thousand like you’re projecting? Way too many. And this party is just getting started. You think the lockdown is the real threat? Wait until all these unemployed, nearly homeless, bankrupt people start getting really desperate. The discord they’re creating will not bode well once these riots start spreading
In response, over 1,000 NYPD officers were deployed across New York’s five borough to enforce social distancing mandates, with police officers reminding people to maintain 6ft of distance and to wear face masks.
I agree, to a point. When a sheriff, who is an elected official, makes a stand he does so in the knowledge that his paycheck is secure. City cops making a stand against the will of their bosses will not only lose their jobs, but also face jail time. You can't really compare the actions of county cops who have the backing of an elected sheriff, versus the actions of city, state or federal cops who do not have the backing of their bosses. Just look at the cops who've been fired over a tweet during the lockdown.
If I were a deputy with the backing of a sheriff making a stand in support of the people he's sworn to protect, I'd be a lot more confident of my future than if I was a city cop who answered to a police chief taking orders from a democrat mayor.
It's about food on the table. Paying the bills. Your child's future. The cops are in a very difficult position here. And with bills to pay, do you choose an action that allows you to keep receiving a paycheck, or do you make a stand knowing that it will lead to your unemployment?
And with bills to pay, do you choose an action that allows you to keep receiving a paycheck, or do you make a stand knowing that it will lead to your unemployment?
I uphold my oath. If I can't do that, then I look for a job that doesn't require me to take an oath.
If they are not willing to do the right thing then they are in the wrong line of work. That said, you have a fair point. I'm not really talking about a single cop defying the orders of his boss.
What I'm getting at here is that entire police departments should be coming out and saying they will not enforce illegal orders, as some have. This happens when the rank and file make it clear to their bosses they are not comfortable with certain orders, and their bosses then make it clear to the public they will not support the abuse of power by mayors and governors. There has not been nearly enough of this.
It's about food on the table. Paying the bills. Your child's future. The cops are in a very difficult position here. And with bills to pay, do you choose an action that allows you to keep receiving a paycheck, or do you make a stand knowing that it will lead to your unemployment?
I believe they're doing the job they're paid to do, which is to follow orders, yes. Because every alternative means they not only get fired, but may even end up in jail. What I'm saying is, what are they supposed to do? Are you going to pay their bills? Send their kids to college? It's their job to follow orders. They do not have the luxury of choice.
The law, for all intents and purposes, specifically stated that those who broke the lockdown should be arrested. They WERE enforcing the law. That's my point. The lawmakers are the ones we should be going after.
Edicts are not laws. Laws are enacted by the legislature or developed by the courts. The purpose of the executive is to implement, not create, law. Just because an elected official days something does not make it a law. Otherwise this is just a monarchy.
Cops are paid to do a lot more than just follow orders. We also expect them to have good judgment. They do not have 'orders' to deal with many situations they encounter on a daily basis so we rely on their ability to assess a situation and determine the right course of action.
This same thing applies here. Assess the situation, determine that some mayors and governors have overstepped their authority, which they clearly have, and determine the right course or action, which is to not enforce illegal orders.
I get the moral argument, I really do. I'm just saying that cops are people too, meaning that they also need their paychecks in order to survive. What you guys are suggesting is that cops should give up their livelihoods, their futures in law enforcement, the food on their tables, in order to stand with "the people" in opposition to their employers. Which is much easier said than done, in my opinion. I'm not a cop, but I'm guessing none of you are either. Would you give up everything you've built for yourself, everything you've worked towards, for the sake of an oath? To side with people who treat you like shit all day long, even when you do your job right?
Taking the moral high ground does not put food on the table. It doesn't pay the bills. You aren't just asking cops to stand beside you, you're asking them to do it at the risk of losing everything they've ever worked towards, possibly even going to jail, to stand beside people who won't lift a finger to help them in return.
Umm that's the entire point of the oath man. In the states with terribly unconstitutional gun laws like NY/NJ, Maryland, Massachusetts, California etc.....those cops my as well not take an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution because it is in direct conflict with the laws of their particular states.
Lol you think it’s “unfair”?! No one gives a shit about your emotional appeal here. Life isn’t fair, suck it up.
They signed up for a job and are intelligent enough to know that they are beholden to the Constitution. This crisis is part of the job. They can either harass people for sending their kids to play with the neighbors or they can uphold their oath.
This is like the healthcare workers expecting to be treated like heroes. If you didn’t think you’d ever be exposed to viruses then you’re not very bright. I’ll respect what they do the same as before, not more and not less.
In the law of the land in the USA the police are not required to obey illegal orders....ever. If the order is illegal the police must refuse. It's a wife's job to tell her husband when he's acting crazy. It's a husband's job to acknowledge that but still continue acting crazy if he thinks it's necessary.
Wait, they are supposed to tell us??? Shit my old lady not keeping up.

Here’s another story, unrelated. https://www.wndu.com/content/news/Two-wounded-in-Wednesday-night-shooting-570827001.html
i guess what makes it different is this was a cop on civilian action.
i personally respect city cop and some county cop. i have deep mistrust with state police.
the police didnt do themselves any favor when they harassed anti-lockdown protestors.
As you’d expect, it’s already buried by blm and trump stories. Here’s link (again, this stuff is so common here, no one even seems to care anymore) https://www.wndu.com/content/news/17-year-old-charged-with-murder-not-in-custody-570841391.html
Edit: I misunderstood the news this morning—the shooting I’m referring to happened May 13th, the charges came yesterday, Jaylin Tucker is at large

I am not writing them off totally. I hope they can redeem themselves. A state police coup in Michigan ought to do it.
You expect too much from dudes who barely graduated highschool.
I don't think this is true. Criminal justice degrees come to mind.
The kids from my high school who are now cops certainly are not the type who should be cops. Anecdotal of course.
Probably still can.
LMAO you think it takes a criminal justice degree to be a cop?
Please re-read post.
I think graduating with a Bachelors in English is more difficult than a criminal justice degree. A CJ degree is right next to communications degrees, which is what a good chunk of people get when they don’t have the will or brain power to do other majors.
What makes you believe this?
It's 100% true, all you have to do is some basic googling.
There is an upper limit to IQ when it comes to hiring. Literally. If you do too good on certain tests, they will not hire you.

Any police officer that arrested a person just for being outside or in a park is not a police officer of the united states.
They are a police officer for their socialist masters.
In the case of the riots there is plenty going on that would have me a question as to what is being supported by the local police in that area.

Not many. 99% of us ignored these unconstitutional orders.
99% of us usually pay for the actions of a few.
No worries though. If I/we wanted to be liked, woulda become fireman. Part of the job.
They have destroyed the public trust on the left and on the right. Big mistake.
Yep, now it’s a classic the enemy of my enemy is my friend. The police have only themselves to blame for uniting liberals and conservatives against them.
Vast majority of cops don't want anything to do with this. Respond to and advise of complaint, if anything.
None. If they'll arrest freedom loving Americans to enforce an illegal lockdown, they are part of the Communist party.

I'm the taxpayer. I pay your salary. You will consider this.
None of them.... because those assholes think they were doing the right thing. Those assholes are the ones advocating releasing criminals from prisons. Those assholes have an agenda...
And they feel like they are heros.
Probably not a lot, proportionally speaking. The kind of cops who would crack down on the peaceful, law abiding citizens probably wish they were in the riots, cracking skulls and firing tear gas.
I don't think so not with the show of force they made to keep people off the beaches and out of parks
None, they got paid and still think anything they do is just their job regardless of whether it is responsible or necessary.
Not as many as we'd like, I'm starting to think...
I doubt a lot, most cops are just looking for a paycheck and the undeserved prestige the job gives them.
Let’s take a step back. Our own president and staff have been harassed ,jailed and financially ruined by federal law enforcement. No accountability. The covid lockdown exposed our out of control state and local law enforcement doing the bidding of crazy politicians. No accountability Now this. This happens all the time in every part of the country, every social economic condition and race. The police have been militarized to the point some could be mistaken for a small countries military.
We need accountability.
Don't bro me.
Lisa needs braces
Not Enough.
Zero. They only care about their precious pensions.
The sad fact is, most cops would turn their head away from what this murderer did. If questioned they would say "I don't remember. I didn't see anything."
I appreciate what cops do and sacrifice for the community, but a good deal of what they get is response to their blue wall and code of silence.
Cops should be policing cops first.
If only they had a conscience, but the vast majority of them are psychopaths that train themselves to not feel empathy for another human being.
I see cops every day. Haven't been harassed once. Not like that everywhere. Just commie states and one offs from podudunk departments
What a wonderful day to wake up and not be a cop!
Cops don't make the laws, idiot.
I think a lot of people are legitimately disappointed at the collective actions of LE during the pandemic, and I'm one of them.
I expected more from our cops in a real moment of crisis.
Once you stop licking the boot it feels good.

Just going to leave this here...

This video is 4 years old and they used FBI stats, it's kinda eye opening. The creator of the videos/cartoons was supposedly a CHP officer.
Paid thugs, then.
In other words, they’re just following orders, right?
I believe they're doing the job they're paid to do, which is to follow orders, yes. Because every alternative means they not only get fired, but may even end up in jail. What I'm saying is, what are they supposed to do? Are you going to pay their bills? Send their kids to college? It's their job to follow orders. They do not have the luxury of choice.
It is their job TO ENFORCE THE LAW, not to "follow orders".
Just following orders, bro. We got families to feed.If you didn't want a knee on your neck, you should've voted for some other guy.
Just doin my job, just followin orders. No thought given to the oath you are to uphold?
I just think that's unfair.
All the way to Nuremberg, fren. All the way to Nuremberg.
