Progress leaves behind those incapable of keeping up. You either accept that, or struggle against it until you have so many incapable of keeping up accumulated on your back that your cities start burning.

There's a lot of weird technology that's suited to space and not earth, and vice versa. The shuttle had the equivalent of an intel 386 on it as I recall - powerful enough to run the systems, but chunky and old and tested enough that the transistors in the IC, onboard cache, RAM are sufficiently massive to not be easily flipped by stray cosmic rays passing by. Which we don't have to contend with on earth.. or at least at the magnitude of this threat outside the van-allen belts. The newer tech has to be shielded really well or it will fail for that reason.. tiny transistors will flip states at the slightest provocation.

Circuit boards that run hot and are based on regular solder formulations will also 'spike' really badly in zero-g, basically shortening the life of the equipment. Softened lead/tin floats around really easy and bridges to nearby pads on the board, shorting things out. And the newer equipment packs these much closer together, like transistors on the chips they mount. So are more susceptible to failing in space.

The adage of the soviet-era tanks that fielded valves and so were naturally EMP resilient compared to the US tanks of similar vintage that had ICs that shorted out in a nuke pulse is instructive.. sometimes the older stuff works better for entirely unanticipated reasons.

With that said, loving the future-looking tech that Elon is trying very hard to bring to a useful form of reliability and function. It cant be easy seeing your pricey prototypes go boom, get excoriated on the social media, and dust yourself off and do it again. Tough like Trump is in a way, not giving up.

It's not just about technology. In fact, it's more about budget and political will. The technology from Apollo is packed into modern cars and other consumer electronics, thus making your life infinitely breezy. Your modern car has more processing power than an Apollo Rocket and only because Apollo existed.

1
NotRealDemSocialism 1 point ago +2 / -1

We could, we had little reason too.

The tech progressed, but the machining to build more Saturn V's degraded. Plants no longer contracted for parts retooled for other projects.

Eventually restarting requires restarting from the beginning. There was barely a reason to build more Saturn V's at the end ... Ten to twenty years later even if interest had returned it wouldn't have returned enough to justify the cost of the rocket AND redoing all the upfront costs as well.

And hell, if you're starting from scratch you might as well use modern technology and not the 1960's plans. Which is what was floated plenty of times, but the cost was always too high.

Being able to land the rocket is an enormous cost savings. The tech has finally advanced enough the make the cost/benefit equation doable in an age where the bonus incentive of 'first' has long been removed from the table.

You really need to shut the fuck up and leave.

1
NotRealDemSocialism 1 point ago +2 / -1

You're free to disagree, but that was the historical reason. The people making those budgetary decisions felt otherwise.

It's not "kinda weird"

And the idea that we "couldn't replicate" the tech is false.

Please slink away now.

You put words to my thoughts! And, I like that name: Social Paperweights"

3
Scroon 3 points ago +5 / -2

"Social paperweights" (great term!) develop because of the increase in technology and social complexity. They're arise in conjunction with "progress".

As a civ progress, technology makes life easier and mortality risks lower, so as a portion of the people become elite producers, others become elite moochers. In lesser societies, these moochers would be left to fend for themselves and eventually they'd burn out or be conquered by non-moochers.

In societies like ours though, we've curated the moochers, allowing them to flourish as if in a virtual societal zoo.

And so that's what we've got to deal with now. A zoo with the bars intentionally removed.

I couldn’t care less about the riots anymore, they will run out of steam and everyone will be over it in a week, just like every riot ever.

So many more important things going on, and I’m not gonna let paid rioters ruin my excitement for this launch today, this is history, the riots are not

So rocket parts when they separate splash in the Atlantic, not over inhabited areas potentially and kill people.

11
Filetsmignon 11 points ago +12 / -1

Because the closer you are to the equator the faster the rotational speed of the Earth (approximately 1037 mph). This additional speed helps achieve escape velocity and get rockets into space. That's why SpaceX has a facility in Brownsville TX and other launch facilities are also near the equator.

3
Kronos 3 points ago +4 / -1

If you were at the equator it would add almost 300 m/s ^V if you launched due east. Most rockets need 9 - 9.3 kilometers per second to get into orbit. So it's an advantage to launch east from the equator, but it's not that huge in the grand scheme of things. Considering an ISS launch is a fairly high inclination (the rocket travels along the eastern coast of the US, not due east) the advantage of launching from closer to the equator is pretty negligible for this specific trajectory.

Those are emergency flight suits designed to protect the astronauts from sudden decompression. In a vacuum, they become very stiff due to puffing out like a balloon. Proper space suits are bulky because they have more rigid sections with joints that make it possible to move your arms and hands without getting tired.

when did TheDonald go from being pro-Trump to a astroturfed elon musk fanclub? Is this the same musk that called the diver that saved the thai kids a paedophile on twitter because he wouldn't use musks crazy submarine so musk can get free PR?

Drugged up sociopath elon Musk literally goes against everything what we pedes stand for. He is NOT a visionary but got lucky investing in paypal before it went huge. He is not the founder tesla but brought into the company later on , stock manipulation and billions of obamas green funding and cali ZEV credits (100k tesla all subsided by yor tax $) to be successful. same goes for spacex the only reason it makes money is because of the open cheque book contracts they get from the gov. He despises conservatives and is only being ‘woke’ and pro maga to be on friendly terms with the government so it does not stop the billions of green tax intensives, credits for tesla (worth $20-70k per car sold) and get lucrative space force gov contracts for spacex.

hes a scammer that makes billions from government welfare: your federeal tax dollars subsidises his teslas and government spacex space missions.

But go ahead drink the astrotufed silicon valley musk worship cool aid.

It’s fascinating to me that a leftist friend pointed out to me (subtly) how Christians believed (and some still do she said) that the earth is flat and that they opposed Christopher Columbus voyage because it would prove them wrong. Did research only to find there were other serious reasons they opposed. Anyway, all that to say- I’d never heard much of that, and thought it so weird she’s bringing it up.

Then, sure enough, poof, the trolls on here spewing this shit as if it is a common belief held by conservatives and Trump supporters. I’ve got to get on her “weekly messaging” list- because inevitably she points out something odd to me- and Wala, there are people on the Donald posting it to validate the leftist messaging.

It’s bizarre. They say we are “THIS”, and then invade our forum with “THIS”.
