I agree - attempted murder is a difficult charge to make stick though. You have to prove intent to kill. Attempted murder is fair and should be what the attacker is convicted of, but a jury is a jury. A couple tears, fake remorse, and a 'I just wanted to knock him out' is more than enough for a bleeding heart to ruin the whole thing.
