A divorced mom here with 2 young sons. I'm considering my first AR-15. I have a Kimber .45 and a revolver, but watching these riots, among many other factors, has me getting into the idea. I'd kind of like to build one, that way I would know it from the inside out. Any recommendations? What kind of training should I be looking to get?

I recently partially built one myself. I'd recommend going easy on yourself to get your feet wet to begin with.

Buy a LOWER RECEIVER from some dealer I Reccommend Tactical Machining myself but you can find a Lower receiver from many different retailers. The lower receiver is the actual "firearm" part of the gun.

Additionally you will need a Lower Parts kit, a buffer tube, and a brace/buttstock. This will provide you with what you need for the lower part of the AR15.

NEXT step would be to find an UPPER RECEIVER or what I would reccommend is getting an UPPER BUILD KIT. You can get a full upper build kit from: Delta Team Tactical, Palmetto State Armory, Aero Precision, & others.

To make it easy....order a full upper already ASSEMBLED. Putting the fully assembled upper on the fully assembled lower is a piece of cake. Ensure that your upper comes with a BOLT CARRIER GROUP which is the heart of a firearm.

Hope that's not too much. YouTube is your friend.
