"Why would you ever need a 30 round magazine for an AR-15?"

I would like to present exhibit A...

Ha, I think after reviewing Exhibit A I conclude you do not need a 30 round magazine. You need a larger one.

For that exhibit A, you'd need a belt-fed mini-gun.

Luke Skywalker: Well, more wealth than you can imagine! Han Solo: I don't know, I can imagine quite a bit!

You don't need a 30-round magazine, you need a 100-round drum.

Important observation there for new gun-owners. One of the things you'll learn quickly when you start shooting is just how unreliable guns can be if you don't properly load magazines, don't control the recoil, use shit ammo, and so on.

I just figured it was cause they were too bulky to carry. Four 30 round mags you can slap on your chest and almost double as an extra layer of bulletproofness vs 1 big ass drum you have to carry with your arm all day and try and maneuver when in a firefight.

My buddy has a drum and we emptied it 3 times in my buddies auto AK and it fed fine each time. (Obviously everyone’s experience varies and I’m sure my 3 times using it doesn’t come close to the hundreds of times you guys have)

Also, you can reload 30s a lot faster than a drum. I don't trust drums.

Yeah, I've only shot 20- and 30-round magazines and they've fed reliably. I like the 20-round ones for shooting prone. The rifle seems like it would get unwieldy with a drum.

Might be better to say: You don't need a 30-round magazine, you need at least a half-dozen loaded 30-round magazines on your person.

Chest rigs that work well enough can be bought for like $30 at a local surplus store, as well.

PS90 has a 50 round mag. good enough for now. The left doesn't seem to know about that one yet so lets stay hush hush on this =)

100 round drums are an abomination. Novelty item I would say. If you want reliable, get 30 round mags.
