I dont know how it is in different states, and I know some have the registration sticker on the plate itself so swapping them out might make it moot, but here in my state the registered license plate number is on the sticker on the front window. If you're trying to keep an eye out for this situation, it's a good thing to keep in mind.

same here, our registration is on the front windshield
WA rule is that the Back License Plate contains the registration tag. Front plate is optional "If it is impossible to affix to the vehicle"
