What purpose? Self-defense while in the street? Single stack 9mm pistol with a good IWB (Inside waste band) holster if your state allows you to conceal carry. The Sig Sauer P365 is highly recommended right now. I have a Glock 43 but the capacity is so low. Glock 43x has aftermarket magazines that hold 15 to 20 rounds which is crazy.
Home defense? 12 gauge shotgun or AR15 make great choices, but a pistol will be just as good. If you can afford the $200 tax stamp then a suppressor is recommended as the sounds will deafen you.
Whatever you choose, I recommend the Magpul training DVDs. Art of the Dynamic Handgun, Art of the Tactical Shotgun, Art of the Tactical Carbine.
