I'll just add that by kneeling to the protestors, the cops, who are supposed to be in a position of authority over the populace (yes, they serve the population but are in a position of authority over them in a situation like this), are giving all control to the protesters themselves. This is antithetical to society in general and for the good of the protests/riots. By symbolically giving control to the protestors and kneeling to them you're empowering them to act more boldly. Cops are there to keep the peace while people protest peacefully, not get involved in their protest.

I think it depends on the person. A looter who found his conscience? no. The free hugs guy? Absolutely. Difference is in safety and sincerity I suppose.
