Republican's in Lincoln's era were for Big Government and Social Justice, while Democrats were opposed to expansion of Federal Power and Social Justice Reforms.

This changed in 1936 when Franklin Roosevelt won as a Democrat on the promise of Federal expansion, which Republican Alf Landon opposed.

It was around that time when the constituencies of each party had a major shift, as Republican's began over the following decades opposing Government expansion while Democrats continued these motives that were introduced first under Roosevelt.

I don't see this party having changed all that much in the past 150 years. Yeah, there are definitely some differences, but its basically the same peds at the ballot box every few years.
