I'll give a short example. The cost of a loaf of bread is based on the cost to make it transport it and materials.

Farmer pays a tax for the water, labor and his property. He passes that cost onto the flour maker. He is then taxed on the sale. If hes smart he made sure he left enough room to make some money

Flour maker is taxed on the property labor ect and is taxed when he sells it to the bread maker.

Same for the bread maker. And the trucking company. And the grocery store you bought it from. By the time you pay your 8% sales tax on that 3 dollar loaf it has already been taxed half a dozen or more times.
