Since both women were vehemently adamant they were the mother of the kid, Solomon decreed the baby be cut in two. The first woman begged Solomon to not kill the child- that the other woman could have it; the second woman believed it to be a fair deal. Solomon immediately cancelled the order, exclaiming that only the real mother would do anything to keep her child alive, and gave it back to the first woman.
