I know that Jon McNaughton is a patriotic artist and he probably intended it in a very patriotic way, but he has depicted many enemy soldiers (including Nazis), so God can't be backing them all. The saying "God is with us, predates the Bible Isaiah 54:17. It even predates the Romans, who would open Jupiter's gates during times of war. Throughout history, many aggressive nations have claimed to have God on their side. The Nazis had a saying, which goes wayyy back in Germanic culture, "Gott Mittuns" (God Is With Us), and afterwards, it was used sarcastically for decades.
There's a nice, but ridiculous song about it by Bob Dylan, but Neville Brothers did a better version IMHO! I say ridiculous because he questions what America was doing in the Vietnam war. The entire fucking world was falling to Communism and if you ask Thai people how grateful they are to Americans for saving them from that shit, they'll tell you they are extremely grateful.
Human warfare is just a continuation of Nature's perpetual struggle. Perhaps my interpretation is mistaken, but I took it to mean that "Peace is coming when we've finally killed everyone".
Therefore, what I meant by "re-appropriating" the painting is that it brings it back to the original, historic and non-sarcastic dynamic perspective of "Yes, God is really with us!", or as the OP said, "I only kneel to one man, Jesus Christ."
Can you enlighten us on the original meaning? I search did not see anything other than Peace Is Coming.
