If peaceful protesters asked for a show of supporting the right to peaceful protest, it's akin to police shaking hands and consoling grieving protesters. This is how it should be. If they were just kowtowing to bullshit looters/etc, then we are fucked.
They are trying to de-escalate tensions. I agree with many here that it does look weak, but I think the goal is to get everyone to calm the fuck down. This would be better than an all out brawl, no?
