Random guy on the internet hacks something, leaves a note "Anonymous did this, har har."
Another random guy, another. At least one guy does it to release some information about corruption (ifrc how it really got started) and now "The Hacker Group known as Anonymous did a thing!"
But what happens if you have a losly defined "Group" of totally, and completely anonymous people? Why, more people join your "cause" and do things they can claim the big famous Anonymous people did it!
And of course, commie infiltrators, state actors from every country on earth, etc. Since it started as an obvious tongue and cheek joke, there may not even be an original guy to stand up and say "I'm actually anonymous and these other guys are lying."
I'm pretty plugged in, but Anonymous always seemed weird to me, so I never paid much attention to them. It's new info to me at least! :)

They've always tended to lean left, but the last good thing they did was Operation Last Resort, which nothing came of ultimately.
