The Passover ritual ensured the protection of a family home by daubing the blood of a slaughtered sheep on the lintels and door posts to ensure that demonic forces could not enter the home. If a sheep isn't available, some nice signs should do.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think...

The passover was a covenant between God and his followers - the blood would signify what later came to be known as Jesus' sacrifice - it was intended to shield them from the wrath of God.

As far as I know it had nothing to do with demons, although similar practices are done in places like China which echo the demon's desire to present themselves like God.

Or dab red dye on the shop door posts with a sign to would-be looters that this is a small sample of blood from the previous looters that tried to target the shop. All they could do was try because before they could accomplish this, a few rounds of a couple of firearms from shopkeeper's vast gun arsenal did their job first.
