Think of why liberals specifically use the colloquial language "African-American" on blacks. The vast majority of these people have never stepped in Africa and neither did their parents or even generations past for hundreds of years. The term is used to tie them subliminally to slavery every time they are identified. By contrast other nationalities don't identify themselves as descendants of cultures, they call themselves Japanese-American, Italian-American, etc. Eventually every ancestry is supposed to simply become 'American', but blacks are glued to this derogatory term for a very obvious reason. Under no other circumstances would it be possible to produce vivid illusions of slavery for an entire demographic that has never seen nor heard racism personally in their lifetimes. It's very much a one-of-a-kind form of self-enforced discrimination where an ethnic group is herded into a "black sheep" mentality. I see all english speaking black people in America as simply Americans. Most other races do not have this past with which to control them.
Which is why despite being black I make sure to say I'm black and not hyphenate. my ancestors who came here may have been slaves, but their descendants were born free and equal under the law and god. They are the sum of their actions as much as I am.
