Personally, I think the answer has nothing to do with racism. It’s police tactics and punishment for the rare instance of brutality. Tactics: define how to subdue and hold a suspect in ways that avoids, when possible, choking and interfering with breathing, that avoids beating someone over the head, stuff like that. Punishment should be more severe and swift for extremely negligent or brutish behavior: loss of pension, firing, perhaps jail time even if manslaughter is not reached. Assault and battery should go both ways.

Also, training for de-escalation is vital.

But I empathize with the daily predicament police face. Their life is constantly threatened. Every encounter is potentially lethal. We need to support our police and empathize with their situation. And extend gratitude.

Citizens should be required to uphold a certain sense of decorum, self-control, courteousness, truthfulness, etc., when dealing with police. And the community should demand it of their citizenry.

As far as racism, it’s simply not the problem the media and BLM makes it out to be. The laws against racism are already on the books.
