An assault is an action, a weapon is an object. Unless the object is used in the action, it's a misnomer.
Hit a guy with a pipe? That is now an assault weapon. Have a second pipe that was never used? Not an assault weapon. It's just a pipe.
The assault is the crime, not the weapon. Calling all weapons crimes is just newspeak.
That's a good point to consider. Would you just call them semi automatic rifles?
