The military trained Zetas are all dead or they're in prison. Only the first 20 or so were actually military (GAFE) and trained by people who were trained at Fort Benning School of the Americas.

The splinters that are left of the Zeras are not particularly organized and they don't have the same connections to Colombian drug traffickers. They have to rely on stealing gas, prostitution, pirated goods, extortion, local drug dealing and whatever other racket they can sink their teeth into.

Yes. Their last few leaders since 2012 (when Z-3, Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano died) have been non military- Miguel Angel Trevino Morales (Z-40), his brother Oscar Omar Trevino Morales (Z-42), and a lot of funkiest related to the Trevino Morales clan.

Zetas now operate more like franchises. You can use the Z name and pay a tax.
