South Africa is probably a better example than Mexico

In Mexico corruption and extremely powerful cartels are the issue

In RSA, it's more an issue of lenient criminal punishment, periodic amnesties for prisoners, slow to non-existent response times by police to violent crime, and a police force that often just seems disinterested.

In RSA if you call the cops for a crime in progress they might show up in 45 minutes or so.

If the criminals get in a gun battle with police their odds of winning and/or getting away are pretty good

To top it off gun laws are very strict and it's difficult to purchase one legally. Not that this seems to stop the criminals.

And it gets worse. If you shoot someone in self defense the burden is on you to prove that it was self defense. You are guilty until proven innocent. Even if they were an intruder in your home. Which happens all the time btw, home break ins/invasions are a frequent occurrence in RSA. You can't find anyone there whose home hasn't been broken into. Car jackings also very frequent. Armed robberies of all kinds, constant daily.

I spent some months there not too far back. Lovely place. Great people. Awesome weather. But such a sad situation.
