Part of what drove them to where they are now is that the Kingpin strategy and other strategies used vs Colombia in the late 80's-90's, have had the opposite effect in Mexico.

There's a reason why things where generally peaceful when it was just the Guadalajara Cartel, Gulf Cartel, and entrenched families in Tijuana, Juarez, and Nuevo Laredo.

Once the Guadalajara Cartel was broken up, it led the various cartels down the path of total war and betrayed alliances. If you are so inclined, it's realty fascinating in how the current Mexican cartels came to be-
