I can absolutely confirm that I went through something similar, even here in Ohio. There was absolutely a subtextual comfort with communism and no one ever mentioned the tens of millions killed by (and after) Stalin's rule in the Soviet Union. After all, it's the kind and moral position to take, isn't it?
