2,4 D is a synthetic plant growth hormone. It works by causing a plant’s growth to outpace its support capability. I think there’s an interesting analogy there.

Dandelions are an excellent survival food. Every part is edible and provide a lot of necessary nutrients. You can even make wine out of the flowers.

They're also good for bees.

Dandelions >>>>>> Lefties

You can even make wine out of the flowers.

We have done so. It was pretty good.

What really? I thought that was just like a myth spread by little kids

3

Yes, dandelion wine is legitimately a thing.

You haven't seen my lawn. My neighbors are pissed!

2
Weremoose 2 points ago +2 / -0

Depends on what you're doing. If you're growing flowers for food, you can freeze the heads every season until you have enough.

I prefer to add them to salads myself.

4
masshole3 4 points ago +5 / -1

You can't just eat em outta the ground though, can you?

Boil in water to make tea perhaps...

33
Weremoose 33 points ago +34 / -1

You can use the leaves like you would any other green. The roots should be cooked, but can be used like carrots. The flowers are edible raw and can be used for tea, jelly and wine.

Just make sure the plants you harvest have not been sprayed with anything

Dandelions have a purpose. You will find them where soil is compact and lacking in calcium. Their taproot goes deep to break up the compact soil and pull calcium from lower soil deposits. When they die and decompose they leave the soil loose and with calcium on the surface. If you leave them alone they will go away in later years.

Also they are an indicator that your soil is too acidic.

20
PrairieRaine88 20 points ago +20 / -0

that explains so much about my yard.

2
jslenterprises 2 points ago +2 / -0

have a patch of my boulevard that is covered in clover, and another section that is covered in non-flowered dandelions... turns out the clover spread is because the soil there is too basic, and the dandelions is because 3 of the local dogs all piss in that area, which makes that are too acidic..

10
LunaFan 10 points ago +11 / -1

I only have one or two dandelions in my yard. I have clovers everywhere though.

8
HongKongFluey 8 points ago +9 / -1

I’ve been weeding all week. This is helpful to know. Does Preen really help prevent them from coming in?

3
VyseLegendaire 3 points ago +3 / -0

That makes sense since Calcium counters acidity. Its also amazing how Dandelions are basically the most nutritious food on the planet.

3
salvecitizen 3 points ago +4 / -1

"where the soil is compact"
So would it help to use a core aerator where they show up, to make life easier for the grass?

Dandelions are really helpful though, therapeutic in tea and you can eat the greens and they are great pollinators. It should be something like poison ivy.

23

Love how a bunch of actual gardeners came in and just defended dandelions.

4
Herecomedatpresident 4 points ago +4 / -0

Exactly!

20
Drew 20 points ago +22 / -2

You give WAY too much credit to liberals. Dandelions are very beneficial plants. The leafs are edible. You can make a tea with the roots that is a coffee substitute that promotes liver health. You can use the flowers to infuse honey and oils. Dandelion wine is a thing. The flowers feed bees. And the roots are great for breaking up heavy clay soils.

I think they’re more like blackberry sticker bushes.

Blackberries grow on undergrowth that’s already established an ideal structure to capture the sun’s rays. They get there because some animal shits out some seeds. Then they take advantage of the growth that other plants have built, and they climb up on top and start choking out the sunlight from other plants.

You cut them out. For your trouble you get poked and cut by thorns. They grow back immediately twice as plentiful. They steal water from the plants you planted, and the good plants start to wither and die. Soon the good plants are nothing but a skeleton as the blackberries multiply and corrupt the other plants. Their roots intertwine and you cannot even get to them to dig them out because you’d have to get rid of the ones you planted that still have a bit of green on them and you hold out hope that maybe if you just keep cutting them back, the plants you actually planted will regain some life and do what they are supposed to do.

But they don’t. The plants that you elected to plant, to make your yard beautiful, die. And every once in a while you get a handful of fucking berries.

Eventually, you get a Trump. Er, I mean, a backhoe. And you level the whole thing.

Because you want to pass something on to your grandkids that is worth a damn.

4
AslanFan 4 points ago +5 / -1

Same could be said for poison ivy or carolina creeper.

4
VoterIDMatters 4 points ago +5 / -1

Except those two don’t seduce anyone with their “berries” and as such they don’t spread as easily and in the case of poison ivy, because of the rash, people spot them and avoid them.

Flowers are inefficient, self absorbed and need protection. Weeds are tenacious survivors. Like my president.

5
FaustyArchaeus 5 points ago +7 / -2

I just spent a day pulling 100 out of my front lawn. Not the same ones but they were all flatweeds.

Also people that call Kikuyu a good grass are animals... Been battling it for years trying to infest my nice Buffalo. I once bought syringes and shot up the Kikuyu with weed killer (wish I was joking but I injected all runners with weed killer). I am slowly winning

Maybe I'm a slow learner but I just realized white gentry libs are demanding anarcho tyranny in the cities, whether its blm, antifa, open borders, or lawless homeless, with the normals demoralized and masked up at home, just to feel righteous about their own virtue in "saving us all." It's a religious cult worse than Jonestown!!! These people have jobs, property and kids in these cities! Madness

4
cccpneveragain 4 points ago +5 / -1

Haha this reminds me of this liberal but I met once. Thinks her massive unkempt yard of weeds is nice because she is "supporting our pollinators". My guess is she's supporting her laziness. Grass irritates my hay fever and I've still been working my ass off since I bought this house to get nice green grass choking out everything

4
Long-Knife 4 points ago +4 / -0

Would've gone with vines. Useless, parasitic, destructive and difficult to get rid of. Usually around because some well intentioned dumbass thought they were nice looking.

4

They are a problem. In Spain we say that "weeds never die" ("la mala hierba nunca muere").
