A Ruger or S&W AR15 is the best do-everything freedom insurance and home defense. The 223 will break up going through the walls of your home better than most anything - even 9mm.
If you can only afford one, the pump action Mossberg 500 is the gold standard. 00 buck for defense. Bird shot for small game. Slugs for deer.
For carry, you can't go wrong with a striker-fired polymer 9mm from a reputable company - Glock, Walther, S&W, Sig. There's no bad choice these days. Just buy a decent belt and holster (don't cheap out).

I'd youtube operator types, many of them run shooting courses and have gun guides. Best for home defense, best for car carry, etc.
