General McClellan was the President Lincoln's Commanding General of the US Army at the start of the civil war.
After refusing to effectively put down the insurrection for a year, he was fired by Lincoln. McClellan ran as the Democrat in the 1864 election and lost to Republican Lincoln.
Lincoln was an outsider. As were the Republicans (he was the first GOP President). Trump is an outsider. Although he is nominally a "republican", his movement is something much larger. It's more of an American Nationalist party. Insiders like Powell will always move against the agents of change.

True story: When I was a kid I met the guy at a Hechinger's hardware store back when those were still a thing. It when he was being touted as a potential Republican candidate to run against Clinton in 96. My dad made me shake his hand. Powell then asked me about my black eye that I had got while playing t-ball. He said, "where'd you get that shiner young man?" I had no idea who he was or what the fuck a shiner was.
