I did a shooting training yesterday with provided rifles, I didn't have my scope yet and this gun doesn't have iron sights. Well, my scope came yesterday afternoon, so I went on my own this morning. Just indoors at 25yds but I'm very happy with day 2! Much left to learn!

Edit: Just to add because people like to know these things. It's a Ruger Precision Rimfire, .22 WMR, with Leupold VX-Freedom scope.

Curious question - are you an ex liberal who recently changed and bought a gun?

No. I've always liked guns and I've never been a liberal. Grew up in the South and everyone had guns. Growing up it seemed you were either a hunting family and the first day of deer and duck season were national holidays or you didn't hunt and therefore didn't really shoot. I was never really interested in hunting and didn't grow up shooting.

I've always wanted to try it, just had to finally quit thinking about it or talking about it and just start doing.

I'm not a liberal, I always liked guns, but I'm growing up in the city and I don't have a gun, never owned one (not op)

That’s a fantastic gun to start with.

Just so you know, that scope is calibrated to be parallax free at 50 yards for the rimfire model and 100 yards for the centerfire. You gonna have much better luck shooting at that distance.

That's good to know. I did read about parallax when I was researching scopes but you know without some experience it's hard to tell. I'm sure it didn't hurt that I haven't exactly gained a steady hand either. Just need more practice. This was a quick outing at the indoor range 10 minutes away from me that only goes as far as 25yds. My real intent is to get out to the outdoor ranges most of the time where I can work with 50yds and further.

Once an outdoor range person, always an outdoor range person.

Congratulations! Good grouping. That’s the way to do it. Don’t panic buy a gun and leave it in a drawer. Take it out and get used to it.

Ear protection. Don't forget it

cccpneveragain [S] 8 points ago +8 / -0

No kidding I figured that out today. I shot outside yesterday but was inside today. Walked through the first door and the next one said ear protection beyond this point. It was already way too damn loud for me in that room. Had to go back and get the muffs out of my bag. I couldn't imagine shooting in there with no ear protection.

Shooting inside IMO requires earplugs and mufffs, espicially if you are taking about 5.56 and up.

Its just not worth ringing ear.

cccpneveragain [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

For sure, I will have to do that in the future inside. No ringing in my ears this time at least. I was just shooting the .22WMR but the guys around were shooting larger rounds. I shot a 5.56 outside on Saturday and I can't imagine shooting that inside.

You are correct.

I do outdoors only mostly for that

Yea it's fun and all but never forget it's a great responsibility.

Always treat a weapon as if it's loaded. Always assume it is loaded.

With that being said... have fun :)

Absolutely! I'm very big on safety and responsibility. It doesn't give gun owners a good look if we aren't always making sure to be responsible.

What distance were you shooting? Learn breath control. There is a very sweet steady hand moment at the end of a slow exhale.

I love the feeling of a perfect trigger squeeze at the end of a breath, and in between a heartbeat. Very Zen...the ultimate relaxation.

This was just 25 yards, from a standing position. Today was as much excitement for the new gun, the indoor range has AC on a hot day and is less than 10 minutes away. There's loads of outdoor ranges with a lot more distances to choose from and not all that far to go.

There's definitely something to the breathing. I bet my instructor yesterday talked about breathing as much as safety. It makes sense and there were a few of those good shots on the bullseye that I felt a bit of a sweet spot. It's like I knew it was a good shot without looking.

Exactly. Keep it up, pede!

Take a heavy breath, exhale, inhale 30%, stop breathing and take the shot within 5 seconds. If not rinse and repeat. You should be able to mark the X every time with that kit.
