Let's be clear. The use of deadly force (a gun) is usually only allowed in response to deadly force. You must fear for your life.
Defense of property won't save you. If you use deadly force to defend only property, you're likely screwed.
Every state is different, but if you shoot someone, and your next words are not "I had no choice," or "he was going to kill me," or something similar, you have a problem.

Despite being absolutely crushed in the voting, I'm going to leave this comment in place for two reasons.
First, it looks like I'm wrong about the law in many states. Honestly, I'm happy about that.
Second, as a regular guy, I still think my comment is the right attitude to have about using deadly force.
From my ccw class they made it very clear you cannot fire just bc you’re being beaten up. You have to be in fear for your life, not just injured.
All that’s up to the jury to decide, but i wanted to clarify what’s being taught. Someone reaching into your car will likely not convince a jury that deadly force was your only option.
