I don't think libertarians are passive just because they don't belong to either established party, though I may be biased as that's how I most closely align (Constitutional libertarian). Ultimately, libertarians just want the most liberty/freedom. They don't want to be oppressed by ridiculous SJW nonsense, hyper religious folks, a police/tyrant state, or anything in the middle. I don't care which side of the party someone is, just don't tread on me (or anybody else's rights for that matter).
