Problem is that legal gun owners have literally no recourse to defend their good name. See the Canadian situation (and NZ I guess too). Make a huge bunch of guns illegal, and you are a criminal overnight. The only way you're "not" a criminal is to disarm to the REAL criminals (them).
Cops, on the other hand, could easily help themselves. Can you imagine if 90% of the force was awesome people you would be best friends with, and 10% were the assholes?
What would easily catch those 10%? Demand body cams. And every single complaint can immediately be confirmed or dismissed.
