Yes.
Under Obama, the rules for "Hate Crime" were redefined. Wray testified years back, but this is pieces of that and other "The Press stand by this story" sort of thing.
If an American of African decent is injured/assaulted, it is presumed to be an an incident of 'White Supremacy' so it can all be tracked down properly. They aren't all charged , but that's some of the tallies.
If a person in/involved with/etc a synagogue is injured/assaulted, it is ... also presumed to be 'White Supremacy' - because, of course, that means Nazis.
Two African Americans fight Two Rabbis, everyone ends in the hospital "Four victims of White Supremacy" and "No, we won't retract our story, them's the official terminology."
Why is there an "enormous spike" of this? Who can figure it out? It's a mystery that no one wants to find out.
The Left literally just kicked off a "Race War" where only one side showed up. And they appear to be currently trying to figure out how to get more engagement.
