They stay there, get with some girl they've known forever, have babies - maybe they stay together for a while before splitting - and repeat. No dreams. No aspirations. No thought of leaving their tiny bubble out of fear for the unknown.
I grew up in a village in Michigan. Less than 1000 people. It was the same there. I couldn't wait to get the hell out. I guarantee 90% of my friends are still within 25 miles from where they were raised. I'll also bet that 50% have never been out of the state for more than a few days for a vacation when they went to Ohio for Cedar Point. My point is that people find a comfort level in a their space and no matter how unsafe/boring/career hobbling they can't leave their known space for the unknown.
