When I was in high school, a year after 911, I stopped standing for the pledge. The reason: I didn’t want to stand for it next to my classmates because I thought they had no sincerity about it. I was a dumb kid, but extremely nationalist. 4 years later I joined the Marine Corps infantry and did two tours in Afghanistan. I look back and regret my selfish little protest, but I also know now that most of them turned out to be liberal fucking traitors anyway. Perhaps 17 year old me was right.
