I could say the same thing about myself. What changed for me was actually just getting to know MY SIDE very well. The people claiming to be so tolerant and loving ended up deeply disappointing me. I was very angry at being lied to. You build your life on it -- it's the foundation. So, I think just seeing reality is what woke me up.
I grew up as a minority (ultra minority) literally the only black kid in school and town. And it was a very liberal area in NY (Syosset, Long Island). My dad was blue collar union but a fair and honest man. My mom was white collar and at the forefront of digitizing medical records. I have been a lifelong conservative (43 going on 44).
I have almost always been treated better by white people, Hispanics, Asians, than black people. It's without fail and it is to this day.
Some of my best friends are Mexican. I don't believe no one is not racist. Especially by today's idiotic standards. I take people on a case by case basis- however, based on personal experience, I'm geared to be more open or friendly towards certain groups. It's not racist. It's experience combined with common sense.
Please tell us what led to you changing?
