I was shocked by the poverty in both (and in some areas of the UK)
One difference was shopkeepers in India will try to maximize what they charge you.
In Atlanta I went into the downtown area and the three black guys working in the clothing store wouldn't even acknowledge my presence, despite me being the only customer, and I left empty handed.

They sure showed me "you dumb motherfuckers, you let a tourist dying to spend money walk away"
In the USA if you're poor, it is because you choose to be poor, as the opportunity to be anything else is abundant if you don't mind working for it.
Poverty is a cultivated mindset and result of bad decisions.
