I dread the day ours have to go over the Rainbow Bridge.

Call your vet and ask if you can bring your dog to a protest at the office. You never know. . .

HANG IN THERE!!!!

The other option is ask your vet if he is willing to make a house call. We did that with one of our cats who was dying from cancer. We wanted him to be at home, surrounded by familiar sites and sounds.

I have no doubt that you can find a veterinarian who will care for your dog. I am in Alabama and had to put my 15 year old dog down just 3 weeks into the Covid-19 crisis. It was not an ideal situation for anyone, but they accommodated me. Please call them to ask how they want to handle this.

Second this. Tate Reeves is a RINO cuck, but for the most part folks around here have stopped listening to him and his bullshit "orders," so you'd have much more luck at a Mississippi vet.

5
Long_time_lurker 5 points ago +5 / -0

Get a vet who does house calls, my brother had to do that recently. Much less painful than making their last memory that of going to the vet.

SonOfABaconator 4 points ago +4 / -0

Honestly drive out of state if you have some extra cash. If you can, have someone else drive so you can chill with your dog in the backseat.

So sorry to hear this. Luckily for us in Florida the vets never closed. I feel your pain. We lost 3 of our 6 last year. Just remember they will be waiting for you at the rainbow bridge.

7
barwhack 7 points ago +7 / -0

If your vet is taking appointments, he can administer a benzo at the door and accept the remains. Your doggo doesn't have to suffer. We are masters over our short-lived pals, and can provide that grace to them.

I'd try to get a vet to come to your house. We were able to get that worked out. It's really the best option.

2

Don't worry, hes just too much of a badass to feel empathy.

55
45semiautosp 55 points ago +56 / -1

Your vet may be able to come to your house. Please ask if this is an option.

Also don't forget to take care of yourself while you care for your pooch. He needs you to be strong for him.

15
saltyliberaltears13 15 points ago +15 / -0

There are some vets who still do this which is nice! I'm in a rural area and I know at least a few who take care of any animal. They're the good old type, like the ones who in the 1800s that would've been a vet, doctor, surgeon and barber

5
TD_Covfefe_Crusader 5 points ago +5 / -0

Yes. We know a local vet who already agreed to come to our house to help with this if the time comes. I'd suggest calling vets directly and asking if they can help.

-18
cheesecakelove -18 points ago +4 / -22

Actually yeah, this whole thread is full of people like that.

My point is that people around here constantly advocate for civil war, but then we have comments like yours acting like you have to be emotionally stable to deal with a dog dying.

12
45semiautosp 12 points ago +12 / -0

ok. well it's okay to have a little empathy. Not all people are as strong as you in dealing with this. A little support goes a long way, and giving a little encouraging nudge now and then, when appropriate, is not necessarily a sign of weakness.

13
ibanez7271 13 points ago +14 / -1

Calm down Karen. Ive never mistreated an animal in my life. You people that treat animals like children are fucking weirdos.

5
Musman 5 points ago +6 / -1

I get both sides here. There is a true companionship between a dog and its owner, but some take it way too far. One of my brothers lets his dogs run their house. He can't go anywhere without this one particular dog. The dog plays him like a fiddle. It really prevents my brother from living his life, he's missed out on a lot because he thinks he must be around his dog 24/7. The dog can't even be out of his site for a second without the dog having a panic attack, not even to take a piss. It's really weird.

You’re coming off like a real head case. Nowhere have I mentioned I don’t like animals.

1
SordidPontification 1 point ago +3 / -2

You tried to counter the argument by opening up with "Karen" as a pejorative. You kinda got the responses you deserved.

And you strawmanned the thread by likening someone who wants to do the best for their animals to someone who is obsessed with them in the most unhealthy way possible.

Genesis 1:28

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth

Our charge, as having dominion over the life that we inherited on this Earth, is a great responsibility. Mocking it as you have slights this responsibility.

Awilen 8 points ago +9 / -1

It's because people want to protect what and who matters to them that they are willing to pick up arms and put themselves in harm's way. That's who I want to rely on, the "soft people" you so easily dismiss, with disgust to boot. You're truly rotten. Emotions aren't weakness.

2
SordidPontification 2 points ago +3 / -1

It's also not biblical, as I mentioned here.

We have dominion over the Creation. Part of that responsibility is to treat living things with kindness and compassion where we can, and to harvest them responsibly.

It's somewhat ironic that hunters are often more keenly aware of this responsibility because they're actively taking the lives of animals to eat than the people who just go to the store. Most of the people I know who hunt have a great deal of respect for the animals they kill, and probably more than the poster you're replying to...

Yep. I look at my girl now and I know one day, I'll be sad again. And then I remember to remember the good times and spoil her with a hug and a treat. I grew up breeding pugs and chihuahuas- AKC, show dogs. I'm 43 and they cross my mind atleast a few times a week.

You're out of line. Also, did you really not know that animals that are not show quality are still highly valued pets? If, by chance, there is an actual defect rather than a cosmetic flaw they are spayed or neutered and are pets?

Rainspa 7 points ago +7 / -0

Again, you're out of line and now have added miss-informed and ignorant to the list. Cupcake, I don't know why you are trying to make this personal, but let's let a wee bit of logic to the conversation. Animals are breed to fill a specific role: Clydesdales to pull a plow, poodles to be water retrievers, border collies to herd sheep. Lately people have brought animals in the house to be pets, and are starting to breed for temperament. That's a good thing.

Domestic animals that don't fulfill a function don't get fed. Example: how many draft horses do you feed daily? Answer: none.

BTW, there was a draft horse holocaust in the UK 1947-1948. The horses were supplanted by the tractor, and 200,000 of them were put down, 40% of them under 3 years old. Right now various draft horse breeds are on the endagered species list.

Donate to their upkeep, you greedy bastard. PS. I'm not a breeder.

I can absolutely justify horses pulling carriages (they are NOT buggies, BTW) in central park. Each of those well-kept animals are fed and cared for, have their hoofs maintained and get regular medical care. They have VERY light-duty (the carriages have wheels FYI).

Been rescuing for 25 years and hate you "breeders"! You're no better morally than blm or antifag!

Good for you, but I think you're making an argument that is a non sequitur here.

There are responsible breeders, and there are the puppy mill type breeders who do things horribly irresponsibly and are responsible for all of the ills of the industry you're railing against.

My mum recently got two Maine Coons from a responsible breeder who breeds her cats once or twice a year, and they're raised underfoot, and interact with her entire family. They're incredibly good animals, very well behaved, and such sweethearts.

My mum's also been rescuing animals for the majority of her 70+ years on this Earth. If you're going to liken someone like her to BLM because she wanted a specific breed because she likes their personality traits, then I'm going to politely tell you to the same thing u/Rainspa said: You're out of line.

-2

SordidPontification 1 point ago +1 / -0

You're Mum's a great person for rescuing but it doesn't take away from the fact she paid for custom dogs!!

Cats, but apparently we're not very detail-oriented. Might explain the irrational anger.

Have a nice day and the comparison sits well with me because I don't understand any of your logic & justification!

You can't, because I have a feeling you're driven more by emotion than logic and reason.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it does imply that you're never going to be able to understand why people make the choices they do. I'd suggest perhaps considering empathy toward others first as that goes a long way.

Edit: The Maine Coon was presumed extinct in the 1960s until a group of people brought the breed back. They're the only native North American cat. Without these people, it would likely be extinct.

So it cuts both ways.

Cheerio.

5
Snypr18 5 points ago +5 / -0

Very much this, and it goes for any animal. Don't risk using a small caliber and making it suffer when a large caliber will do. Done right, it is a very quick way to go.

4
Weremoose 4 points ago +4 / -0

That, and it's an emotional thing to do. Your animal isn't going to understand. So don't miss and make the final thing they feel be betrayal.

Meanwhile Floyd has had multiple memorials, two funerals, hundreds of thousands of attendees, and a gold casket.

While we can't take our pets to the vet.

Not to mention, he held a pregnant woman at gunpoint and was a bad man. But he's a hero that gets a gold casket. While my Korean War veteran grandfather got a pine board box.

This is how the left pushes people to the far right. Fuck them, fuck this, I'm done. The time for reason has passed.

8
hit_backspace 8 points ago +8 / -0

Floyd was a career criminal who robbed and assaulted people.

I didn't know this before because the media hid it so well. He did not deserve some sort of grand ceremony. Fuck George Floyd. May he never rest in hell.

3
SordidPontification 3 points ago +3 / -0

I don't think most people know this, because the media has been doing everything they can to make him out to be some innocent angel in all of this.

It'd explain why so many people get angry when confronted with the truth. It's challenging everything they thought they "know."

I had a very sick dog put down during this. They let us be in the room alone with him as long as we wanted. When we were ready the vet came in and gave him the drug. They had rigged an extra long I. V. line so that she (the vet ) was a distance from us. They left us alone to cry over him. No one wore masks. He was buried next to his friend in our yard. Call around to vets til you find the right one.

It always is. They're a part of the family.

Lost a beloved cat 1.5 years ago, and we all took it pretty hard since he was always there (often in the middle of everything). But as he got nearer to the end, he just wanted a lot of attention, and to be near a human.

I think that made it harder to let go. They know.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then will you do what must be done, For this -- the last battle -- can't be won. You will be sad I understand, But don't let grief then stay your hand, For on this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship must stand the test. We have had so many happy years, You wouldn't want me to suffer so. When the time comes, please, let me go. Take me to where to my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me till the end And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree It is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do; We've been so close -- we two -- these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears.

And you’ve been the best owner any dog could ever wish for.

Always remind yourself of the grand scheme of things. That’s a wild animal you have tamed, fed, given shelter, health, protection, and love. In the wild, your dog would have to fend for itself and would have its life span cut in half. Instead your dog hit the nature jackpot and got to live with you.

It’s a great app. You basically join your “neighborhood”. Which is a zone.

I’m new to it myself. The funny thing is I joined it because I read this super cucked article on theVerge calling it racist and said it’s full of white supremacy.

Obviously I had to get it then because it was probably the exact opposite.

Turns out the left hates the posts on there where people report crimes nearby. Apparently neighbors looking out for eachother is racist.

6
ThurstonHowell3rd 6 points ago +6 / -0

You have better luck than I did. I joined a few years ago only to find out it was an online rallying point for retirees that were using it to organize an anti-Trump rally on a local street corner in town. When I told them that not everyone in the neighborhood would share their views, they told me that I should think about moving. I deleted my account and haven't been back since.

Same. My husband and I tried it out at our last place. It was full to the brim with Karens and just terrible people in general. I left and my husband got banned for not bending the knee to their mob mentality.

Here's to hoping OP has better luck!

And if you read this OP, I'm so incredibly sorry for what you and your buddy are going through. It's never easy, but hopefully you find peace when he does. I hope someone at your vet's office or one of the other local vets have a heart and let you be there for him.

I am sorry. I am grateful your husband will be there with him. Losing a beloved dog is tough. I remember when we had to put down our poodle Roscoe after fifteen years. I was away at college and insisted my dad go in and hold Roscoe and stay with him. Roscoe was always kind of an ornery dog and as soon as the vet gave him the shot, old Roscoe bit the heck out of my dad's hand. We always appreciated that Roscoe got the last word and my dad had a nice scar that reminded us of our crazy, wild dog.

My thoughts are with you today. I know how much it sucks. Let me know how it goes with your husband-that's a rough position to be in.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog! I lost mine last year, he was 19 god bless the little guy he lived a good life. His last night was very difficult, he was breathing very fast and would cry if anyone left his side. We had scheduled him to go to the vet to be put down at 8 am. I had stayed with my mother as she had called me at 2 am saying he was going. I went home around 6 am to change as I only had pajamas with me, he passed about 5 mins after I left. Not being there still haunts me to this day, and the sadness I feel over the loss is still there. I never thought it would be as difficult as it was. Be with your pup, cherish every moment you have left with them. They really do love so unconditionally, a type of love not many will experience outside of their dog. I'm sure to some, my story may sound silly but I got my dog when I was 7. He was there for almost my entire life. I miss that little guy. Praying for you pede and your dog, and when your dog crosses over I know my good boy will be waiting with a steak for him

I put my 17.5 year old toy poodle Oscar down on May 22nd. The vet said not to come in cus of covid but I went anyway because he was succumbing today dementia and seizures and I couldn’t stand it

I showed up, they looked pissed for about a millisecond and then let me in and it was all gravy. A week letter they sent me a condolence card hand written

These people went into this profession because they love animals. Just go.

4
RiverFenix 4 points ago +4 / -0

That's a good suggestion, but if he lives deep in a Democrat city he might have trouble finding a Vet willing to even open the door. My suggestion was to try and contact a vet in the country that deals with farm animals - they're usually equipped to deal with the more extreme/odd situations. City vets are still probably good animal doctors, but they're still 'city folk' and aren't nearly as compassionate as country folk. Case in point: A city vet won't shoot your cow and take 'half' as hamburger meat. A country vet will.

Was in the exact same position a few years ago. Stayed up all night and took off work that day to stay be him. He ended up passing an hour before we were gonna take him back in. I'm so glad I decided to bring him back home rather than just put him down on the spot. He got to be in his comfy spot surrounded by love for his last day, rather some strange cold hard table.

That said, it came on quick with him, he was a beast and didnt let on until the last few days. Either way, I'd refuse to not be there. Keep your head up man and good luck with it.

I had to let my 16 year old cat go one month ago today. My vet isn’t letting anyone come in for anything other than euthanasia so at least I got to be there with her. For regular visits you wait in the car and they come get your pet. I couldn’t imagine not having been able to. It was one of the hardest decisions and days of my life. My prayers are with you and hopefully you can convince them to let you in. Or maybe there’s another vet in the area that will.

It makes my blood boil that they let a felon have a televised funeral with masses of people but then situations like yours and others are going on. My best friends father passed away last month, and they had to watch the casket get lowered from their cars. Infuriating.

See if you can get a Vet to come to YOU. My cousin had a vet make a house call when his dog reached her end, they did it all right there in the livingroom, on her own dog bed.

I agree with everything you are saying and feeling and thinking right now. What they're doing to us with the one-two punch of the bullshit virus and its bullshit lockdown, and then the two week Hero's Funeral for that dirtbag George Floyd, trying to make it about race when there is ZERO evidence that it was race based, what you are going through is exactly the kind of pain they're trying to cause, and it is exactly what we need to share with others to make sure that these people NEVER get political power ever again. You and I and everyone we know, we need to remove these people from office in every single election from now until the end of time.

Shortly after the lockdowns started, our French Bulldog passed away. We let him out to pee for about a minute and when my wife went to open the sliding door, he was laying on his side in the grass. My wife knew there was something wrong so she ran out to pick him up and brought him in the house. His tongue was sticking out of his mouth, he had labored breathing, and his eyes were dilated. My wife is a hospice nurse and knew right away he was actively dying. We were able to hold him for 10-15 minutes, comfort him, and love him until he passed. We were lucky to have that chance to be with him in his last moments. I feel for you, OP, and pray you find a vet that can accommodate you because your little buddy shouldn't have to die alone like so many other pets and people have had to.

Check for some at home euthanasia services. I had to put my dog down early in the shutdown and that is what I did. He was scared of the vet office so it was much less stressful for him as well.

I was in Japan when my good boy started to turn for worse. Was scheduled to deploy the day he collapsed and they could not delay my departure. Japanese vets would not euthanize, so I had to leave the dog I’d raised since he was 6 weeks old to die without me. My wife had to take him daily for treatment until his little heart stopped.

That was 10 years ago, and we still miss him. My wifeypede is the strongest person I know, and she’s gone through worse than this since.

MY ADVICE IS TO CONTACT A RURAL/FARM VET.

They're used to dealing with cows that have gone rogue and will likely have the injection you need to quietly euthanize the dog.

So SAD. Good luck.

I'm so sorry about your dog. I like dogs more than I like most people. My mom and dad had to put our family dog down the other month. Even though he gave us 16 great years, it was still extremely hard. We don't deserve dogs. Please stay with yours as long as you can. God bless.

Take good care of him as best you can.

When my dog was dying I moved my computer downstairs and I brought down the blanket and pillow I use for her. That's so she doesn't get lonely if I had to go out and buy something. She couldn't walk or eat properly anymore, but I sat beside her 16 hours a day while working at home and I only left to sleep. I gave her hot baths, carried her to the toilet so she could poop and fed her raw egg and water through a funnel because she wouldn't eat solids anymore, but it was clear she still wanted to stick around a little longer.

I spent four days with her like this. I had to go to the bathroom on the fourth night and she wagged her tail at me when I walked by. She was gone by morning. I put her in a clean white sack with some herbs from the garden after brushing her fur and buried her before noon.

She's been with me for 18 years. She bit me a couple of times in the arm and bit my niece once in the face when she stepped on her tail, but she let go right away and felt sorry for it after.

Enjoy your time with your pet. I wouldn't have brought mine to the vet to be put down even if the option was available to me. She deserved to stay at home and I was with her until the end.

I am so sorry for your loss

It is such a tragedy that we are capable of loving something with such a drastically shortened lifespan when compared to ours.

Stay strong pede

I'm so sorry for you and your best friend. Been there, not with the current bullshit, but it just fucking hurts you in your soul. I had to do that a few years ago, held his paw until his suffering was over. Be strong, 'pede.

My condolences, op. Our local governments have been way out of line with all of this.
