Slavery wasn't a wrong when it happened, it was a system practiced forever by everyone to prop up their economy and get people to do low skills jobs to feed growing populations so your people could focus in other areas of society building. Slavery in 2020 bad, slavery in the 1500s-1800s part of life since forever.
We can look back and say it's bad but if it wasn't foreign slaves it would of been peasants and on and on, a caste of society was always being shat on and being taken advantage of because there were no tractors and industrial farming back then....
So you either used slave labor, starved, or abused the majority of your population to toil the land leaving it ill equipped to handle other countries raiding parties to slave your people.
Slavery wasn't evil it was an important part of society building during antiquity till the industrial revolution.
It wasn't globally established as wrong though in Europe it was generally prohibited.
The reasons for slavery taking off during expansion are for a few reasons. Least not of all the muslims were doing it to christians with authorisation given to do to them as they do to us.
Though there are other reasons as well such as outside of Europe being outside of jurisdiction and that while others are still doing it, gaining a competitive advantage from it you can't rule it out entirely if you want to compete.
Still the 1500s were very different times to now and circumstances weren't such that it was reasonable to expect universal abolition of slavery. More of a patchwork with slavery on and off but even back then Europe was ahead and very progressive eventually culminating in the abolition of slavery.
